Last Country Seat
on Manhattan Sold

New York, January 18 (Special)
The last country seat that remains
on Manhattan Island has been sold, it
is announced, and hereafter the
greatest .borough in the city of New
York will have no estate with a man
sion on it to which the owner may in
vite his friends. The final place of
the sort to go is Tryon Hall, and it is
situated on the historic site at Wash
ington Heights, where Fort Tryon of
Revolutionary days existed. LatelyMt
has been owned by C. K. G. Billings,
noted as a horse owner and millionaire.
He must necessarily be the latter, for
Tryon Hall could only be maintained
by one of the great wealth, as it means
something liko two million dollars of
improductive capital to the possessor.
Its situation is the best asset of the
estate.however for it stands high
above the Hudson River, in one of the
healthiest parts of the city. New
Yorkers have long since becomeused
to the experience of seeing itsmore or
less luslone land marks destroyed and
they will find what confersation they
can have in this instance in fact that
the land so long practically uninhab
ited may become available, in one way
or another, to the uses of the people
generally.

York women have just opened an est

support. The action of these women,
who are well known in society and in
various lines of commendable activity

Women are becoming a factor in the
work of the city along new and pecu
lair lines. Naturally those who have
wealth choose the fields with which
thoy are most familor in going into
business, one of which is tho decora
tion and finishing of the home or of
institutional buildings and similar
work. One woman recently has exon
specialized in the fitting of nurseries,
not necessarily of the more luxuriout
sort.
Any figure that might now be col
lected as to the proportionate amount
of business that women conduct as
compared with men would be of little
value, for the newer activities of
money earners among women are
proceeding largely along creative lines.
In New York, at least, they appear to
be striking out into new fields rather
than elbowing their way into est
ablished ones. The spirit of the times
appears to be in accord with them,
for if certain professionshave shown
a tendency to close their doors to as
pirants, tooth men and women with
the assertion that they are crowded,
other pastures are being found all
around. The new kinds of businesses
that have been started in the last few
years, and which were unthought of
before, is one of the astonishing fea
tures of New York life. Whether by
shrewd calculation or by initiative,
women are proving themselves to be
geniuses in the ferreting out of hither
to unknown or undeveloped fields of
remunerative employment. Their pre
sence ha9 enlarged the work of the
secretary, for instance, from that of
an office attache to the dignity of a
profession with universities shaping
courses leading to degree and pro
ficiency in it. Scores of busy offices
on or near Fifth Avenue would be va
cant now if women in recent years
had not thought out and developed
businesses that were never heard of
