Calls.
The call is an inquisitive move made
by poker players and society women
when they want to see what the other
fellow's got. In either case it is fatal
if the other fellow has nothing.
The call is of infinite variety and
many kinds. There is, for instance,
the call: Of the Wild; of the unutter
able bore; of the loan you enn't pay;
of the neighborhood tomcats at mid
night; of the bill collector; of the boss

Other Teutonic representatives and
neutrals will be guests.
It marks the first appearance of
Countess von Bernstorff at a diplo
matic dinner in the White House
since the wnr opened. The countess is
an American but has been in Europe
for two years. She returned to Amer

the position of honor at President
Wilson's right, the ambassador Fitting

$800,000,000 Knglnnd has borrowjd in
the United States since the wnr began
in 1914. This is expo-ted to be a di

collateral in the United States. The
new loan probably will run five years.
No objection is expected by Morgan
from the federal reserve board so
long as the collateral is kept liquid so
it can be realized on by the bankers
when the money is needed. Great
Britain already has $sno 000.000 in
loans coming due in the United States
between 1918 and 1921.
Magazine prints an article about her
in which the writer says:
"The most impressive piece of work
that Mrs. Warren and Miss Koehler
have put through is a type hitherto
universally conceded to the male of
the species. It is a wall five hundred
feet long, five feet thick, and from
twenty to forty feet high, built of solid
masonry, and reaching down to bed
rock alongside an arroyo whose tur
bulent waters at the rainy season
threatened to undermine the business
portion of Silver City. Mrs. Warren
was the engineer for this monumental
piece of masonry. She cut from her
own quarries the huge rocks used. She
hauled lumber for the scaffolding from
her own sawmill. She installed steam
derricks, steam shovels and steam
pumps. She and Miss Koehler worked
superintending relays of Mexicans,
fighting the rising' water to give the
mortar time to dry. There were over
three hundred Mexicans on her pay
rolls in those days, but only Miss
Koehler on the skilled workman list.''
