Everyone who has lived within
sound of the Bells of Westminster is
familiar with the verse given above.
The origin of the carillon has never
been positively established. Some
writers accredit it to a Mr. Crouch,
who was a pupil of Dr. Randall,
Regius Professor of Music. This, how
ever, is disputed by other writers who
accredit it to Dr. Randall's conception
of the idea taken from a movement m
the fifth bar of the opening of Haen
dcl's Symphony, "I know that my Re
ceemer liveth." The Chimes were first
l'tted to the Clock of University
church, St- Mary'1; the Great, in Cam
: idge, but were not copied until they
were reproduced on a very large scale
m the Victoria Clock Tower of the
Houses of Parliament.

Imbler Team Beaten

The Y. M. C. A. basketball team de
feated the Imbler hown team Satur
day night at the Y. M. C. A. gym
i.asium by the score of 49 to 14. The
score does not, by any means, show
the playing ability of Imbler; the
team is a fast one, but the fr-.ct that
they were playing on a new floor and
the baskets wcro new to them made
their score so low. The Imbler team
had scores of shots for baskets but
could not ring them. A return game
will soon be played at Imbler and tho
local boys are expecting that it will
sure be a battle rayol. All of the

a-.bility. Larson, Nilcs and Brownell
each played their fast game, but the
flaying of tho guards, Fritz Lottos
and "Bee Barton, wan clearly a fea
ture, many times the two guard were
defending the basket from three of the

Kamela
Kamcla, Jan. 8. (Special) The
weather has been very disagreeable
this past week. There has been eith
er snow or rain every day so far.
The snowplow has been quite busy
keeping the track free from snow. The
railroad has employed a number of
men on the section.
It is not known just exactly how
deep the snow is, but it is somewhere
near 5 1-2 feet. The woodhaulcrs have
become disguested and announce their
intention to quit. They have worked
for three weeks and now they have no
roads, nor any foundation as the snow
underneath is rotten and tho horses
go in up to their bellies. Several have
injured their horses and gained noth
ing. The railroad has taken one of the
light engines off of the Kamcla help
er service. Business getting slack
again after the rush is the reason giv
en. The wipers say they only had one
engine to clean Thursday night.
School started Tuesday but many of
the pupils could not go on account of
the grippa which, seems to maintain
good hold on Kamela.
Mrs. John Currart returned home?
from La Grande Friday morning. She
went down to se the doctor as she has
been quite ill. Her two boys, Johm
and Dan, have also been quite ill.
Ed Wetzel was hurt by the steam
plow Friday. His hip waa cut an
couple teeth knocked loose. Ho waa
taken to La Grande. ,

Crae, who died here last week, waa
held in the Presbyterian church, and?
was attended by a large host of
friends. Rev. L. A. Cook conducted!,
the services, after which the burial,
took place in the Wallowa cemetery..
The death of Miss McCrae occurred at
tho homo of her parents, Mr. and Mrs..
Roderick McCrae, after a lingering ill

Fifteen Cents a Day Feeds Convict.

Superintendent J. B. McManus, of
the New Mexico penitentiary, has
"benten all records" for living cost
by feeding convicts ample wholesome
food on 15 cents a day.

fairs, members of Red Cross Lodgo
No. 27 K. of P. are to meet tonight
and resume the regular schedule of
meetings. Installation of officers will

Grand Chancellor Delile Green will
officiate in tho capacity of master of
