Good One to Form

The following editorial is quoted in
part from the current number of the
Saturday Evening Post, the article be
ing headed "The Library Habit":
"Our mail makes us a bit peevish
about public libraries in general.
Many times every year we are asked
I to recommend a book containing in
formation on this or that subject of
general interest. We are dways glad
to comply to the best of our limited
ability; yet we never answer ono of
these letters without wondering why
public libraries do not imnr.':s them
selves more definitely ami extensively
upon the consciousness of tho who
support them or who.se iitiiificiaiics
they are supposed to be.
"The writer of the letter i, obvious
ly intelligent or he would not be seek
ing information. By the same token
he is interested in subjects of general
concern. Yet, as obviously, ho does
not know that about three times out
of five there is a public institution not
far from him, supported at large ex
pense, which not only contains stand
ard books on the subject he wants to
known about, but makes a special
business of supplying him with those
books promptly and without expense.
"From its card index he can learn
in five minutes what books there ara
on the subject, and attendants will
fetch them to him on request . . .
" "The library habit is one of the
best that any person can form. There
should be a more strenuous effort to
inculcate it. Meantime take the ini
tiative yourself." Get acquainted with
your public library."
Among the various publications in
the local public library which give in
formation of this sort are the fol
lowing: "The United States Catolog," a
work of the size of the unabridged dic
tionary, contains a list of all books In
print in the United States, with the
names of publishers, and prices. This
is supplemented monthly and annual
ly. It contains subject entries also.
Thus, it is possible to find in a few
minutes a list of recent books on a
given subject; for example, for the
past year, eight works are listed on
"Agricultural credit"
Another index- which keeps up o
date, with a complete annual edition,
is the "Book Review Digest." This
gives the names of the most import
ant new books, with a brief summary
of the contents, and extracts, favor
able or unfavorable, from book re
views published in the leading papers
and magazines. Thus "When a Man's
a Man," by Harold Bell Wright, 's
given half a column, in which the
"Boston Transcript" is quoted as say
ing that "He knows as little about
human nature as a caterpillar knows
about the Halley comet, etc." On the
other hand, the Springfield Republi
can tells us that "Mr. Wright's psy
chology may not be always convincing,
but the book's wholesomeness and
manly strength are probably more
characteristic of American life than
some of this author's sophisticated de
tractors pretend."
Less inclusive, but very reliable, is
the A. L. A., i. e. (American Library
Association) Booklist. This contains
a selection of the best new books, with
descriptive and critical notes. It is an
excellent guide for the selection of
liooks for children, and lists the most
interesting of the recent government
documents.
It is possible to find any given ar
ticle in the best-known mngazincs, by
reference to the "Readers' Guide to
Periodical Literature," which also lists
all articles on the subjects currently
written about.
These indexes arc all accessible to
the public on request. If you want in-!
formation, and have not time to come

Everyone who has lived within
sound of the Bells of Westminster is
familiar with the verse given above.
The origin of tho carillon has never
been positively established. Some
writers accredit it to a Mr. Crouch,
who was a pupil of Dr. Randall,
Regius Professor of Music. This, how-t-ver,
is disputed by other writers who
accredit it to Dr. Randall's conception
of the idea taken from a movement in
I ho fifth bar of tho opening of Haen
dcl's Symphony, "I know that my Re
ocemer liveth." The Chimes were first
i'tted to the Clock of University
church, St. Mary's the Great, in Cam
V.idge, but were not copied until they
were reproduced on a very large scale
in the Victoria Clock Tower of the
Houses of Parliament.

vibrant tone.
May we hope that the Chimes will
mean something to all of our people
that they will have a message for tho
youngster on his wny to school; a
thought for the business man who hus
Hps through his day; a solace for the
old.
Every day of the week the chimes
will be sounding their message the
note of warning spoken in time; the
chime of rejoicing; the lament in time
c-f soitow. This chime will be oil
things to all wen for it is going to be
kng not to us alone, but to men- and
wemen and children of our community.
