Hilliard was on his way to the Wil

ferry he drove intrepidly ahead, until
an interfering policeman called to him
to stop.

safety lines," the man said, "you'll
have to back over to the other side."
Harry had driven his car exactly
three and a half times, and backing
had not yet been called for in all this
experience. He thought for an in
stant, remembered his book of instruc
tions, then began the process of back
ing. One of the white safety posts
toppled beneath his wheel.
"Stop!" the interfering policeman
crici, "you'll destroy our signals."
Hilliard stopped.
Then the interfering policeman ob
ligingly rushed into the breach, and
uprooted the white posts. It became
necessary to take four of the six away
before the hero of a dozen movies
could extricate himself and his

Now Harry has a philosopny of
"People say the movies are harass

task of jumping into lakes and off of
buildings is dangerous. They say it
is irritating to work all day in the hot
studios during the., summer months.
But people who say such things have
never driven an automobile."

"Witchcraft," R. Ralston Reeds
story which won the prize onereu u
the Lasky company for original photo
plays written by students oi in
photoplay at Columbia University, is
at once a good vehicle for Fannie
iWard and a romantic drama or marK
ed appeal. It will be shown at the
Arcade, today and tomorrow.
TaVon n a whole "Witchcralf is a
nffnrinir. It is better than
Hin nveracre feature by a good margin
Miss Ward has the best opportunity
tio Then." and she eives a
tnr nerformance. She is cast as the
Hm.aVitpr of an ailine woman who is
accused of witchcraft by the people in
the small New England colony where
t.hev take un their residence. Suzette
and her mother are Hugenot refugees
nl the fact that they are foreigners
only adds to their unpopularity in tho
village.
Suzette and Richard Wayne become
attached to each other but they part
when he leaves for Boston to be a
soldier. During his absence Suzette
is forced to marry an old miser in
order to save her mother from the
toils of the deluded people who believe
in witchcraft. It is an unhappy mar
riage for Suzette, and an unnecessary
one. f or her motner aies on tne aay
of the wedding. Wayne returns, but
on finding Suzette married ne tninics
it best to leave again, as ms auec
tions for her is strong. Later Suzette
is accused of being a witch and sna
about to be hung when Captain
Wayne arrives carrying a proclama
tion from the governor putting such
practices down for all time.
Frank Reichter directed tne produc
tion. The direction and the produc
tion are of a high order of quality
and they materially add to the appeal
of the picture. The flashes of Suzette
dressed as a boy on her trip tnrougo
the woods to call the aid of the sol
diers deserve sDecial mention. They
are beautiful and eloquently life-like
scenes.
Paul Weigel is excellent as Make

as the Indian woman are satisfactory..
The name of the little girl who tells
fancied tales of what she saw at tne
Indian woman's cabin to a group of
children and accuses Suzette at the
trial is not given in the cast, but just
the same she is a remarkably fine lit
tle actress and she will attract muck
notice by her playing in this produc
tion. "Witchcraft," to sum up, is an.
admirable .Lasky offering.
