Five Game Reservations.
Washington, D. C, Dec. 21.
(Special) 'Five big-game preserves
and 67 bird reservations are main
tained by the biological survey of the
United States department of agricul
ture. The mammal reservations in
clude the Montana Bison range, the
Wind Cave game preserve in South
Dakota, the Niobrara reservation in
Nebraska, the Elk Refuge in Wyom
ing, and the Sully Hills game pre
serve in North Dakota. The Niobrara
reservation was intended as a bird
reserve, but has been stocked with
big game and is at present maintain
ed chiefly for buffalo and elk, accord
ing to the annual report of the chief
of the biological survey, just issued.
In the first three reservations men
tioned the herds of buffalo have
shown a notable increase since their
tstablishment a few years ago, says
the renort, and now include 207 head.
lor more than a third of all the buf
falo which now belong to the govern
j ment. The elk number about 160 and
i the antelope 40, making a totai of
about 400 head of big game.
I The number of bird reservations
I was increased during the year by the
addition of the Big Lake reservation
in Arkansas. Sixty-seven reserva
tions are now maintained primarily
tor birds, ihe report urges the im
portance and necessity of retaining as
breeding grounds for water fowl and
other birds, tracts of land which are
not especially valuable for agricul
tural purposes. The area of maisli
land necessary for breeding grounds
is insignificant, it is said, in com
parison with the benefits which will
accrue to the pubic through the in
crease in our supply of game birds.

May Vote Dry Spot in Texas.
Austin, Tex., Dec. 21. (United
Press) Prohibitionists today were
striving to give the next legislature a
dry spot in which to cogitate on th3
proposed state-wide anti-booze meas
ure, which is scheduled to provide tha
fireworks in the coming session.
Travis county, in which tho cap.tal
is located, is voting on local matters.
The drys are confident of victory,
even though they have had to worry
along in their campaign without th.3
