How one of the daughters of this
quaint little island, now a favorite of

punishment to one of her own sex
who seeks to steal the affections of
her husband, is depicted in a graphic

Neill, Thomas Delmar, Raymond Hat

A motive of revenge, which leads
a woman to seek the unhappiness of
her husband by humiliating her own
unknown daughter, gives a startling,
and vivid background to the work
which Valeska Suratt does for Wil
liam Fox in her new picture, "The
Straight iWay." Miss Suratt plays
Mary Madison, a woman who has
been wronged by her husband, and
cannot forgive.
Wlhen the story begins, Mary's re
lations with another man are unjustly
suspected by her husband. He casts
her off, and she, heartbroken, leaves
her baby daughter in the care of a
sister. Later, when the husband
John Madison (Herbert Hcyes) hears
that Mary has been killed-in a rail
road wreck he takes the daughter in
to his home.
Many years after, Mary hears that
Madison has been elected governor of
his state. Sho determines to have
her vengeance on him for wrecking
her life. She makes a plot with Dan
Walters (Glen White), a former con
vict. Walters is to marry Madison's
daughter, Marion (Elsie Balfour).
Mary does not know that Marion is
her own child, but believes sho is
Madison's daughter by a second marriage.

Well-known Pendleton Man Victim
of Heart Disease Yesterday Noon.
Pendleton, Dec. 14. (Special)
George R. Sawyer, for the past 18
months a resident "of Pendleton,
dropped dead at his home, 302 Gar
den street, about 11 o'clock yesterday
noon, death being ascribed to heart
failure. He had not been feeling well
for some time, but yesterday resumed
his position with the O.-W. R. & N.
Co.
He had complained in the morning
of not feeling well to his daughter,
but it was not thought he was seri
ously ill. About 11 o'clock his daugh
ter found his lifeless body lying on
the bed. . A physician was hastily
summoned but death had already
been there first.
Mr. Sawyer was a civil engineer by
occupation and for 16 years had serv
ed as a county engineer in Washing
ton, eight years in Lincoln county
and eight years in Franklin. He re
tired from office holding in Pasco
four years ago. He came to Pendle
ton about a year and a half ago.
Deceased is survived by a daugh
ter, Miss Mary Sawyer of this city,
three sons, Tom and Harry of Pasco,
and A. Sawyer of Spokane, and a
brother in Kalispell, Mont. He was
about 55 years old.
