North Powder Contests Not Excit

"North Powder, Dee. IX (Special)
Snow has been falling nearly every
clay for the past week but the warm
weather hus melted much of it, so that
it is not as deep as it would be othcr
'arise. There are several inches, on the
level, and it is fretting deeper very
tasX. A few people arc still running
their cars, but it will not be for long if
Jthc snow keeps falling. The deep
sumtw is fine for fall grain and the
Jfamiera are not complaining. The
weather is not very cold so we are
Jiaving ideal winter weather.
City Election Held.
North Powder had its city election
5ast Tuesday. Mayor Kiordan suc
ceeded himself, Grant Dalton and
tChris Johnson succeeded themselves
us councilman, and R. W. Parker will
3 the. only new member of the body.
Ellis Hess was elected recorder and
Merman Rothchild treasurer. There
was not as much excitement over the
city election as there was over the
presidential election.
There is very strong talk of a com
pany being formed to build a new
theatre or playhouse. The high school
basket ball team and the town basket
ball team have no hall to meet in
and the different lodges and other so
cial societies want some place to have
their meetings, so there is strong talk
of a stock company being formed and
I building an up-to-date building. If
the company is not formed several in
dividuals have signified ther willing
ness to put up a building themselves.
.Many Kial Estate Deals.
Several real estate transactions
have been made in this city in the
1 past 'week. Chris Peterson disposed
of 120 acres to Charles Moore for
$10,000. John T. Shaw purchased of
Chris Johnson the 120-acre tract ad
joining the Dalton farm. Oscar
Smith tml.l n Aft-nnvn 4-.,..f In 17 W
! Parker and James,Riggs an adjoining
' forty. Oscar Smith purchased a
1 nino-acre tract from James Simonis
on Wolf creek and will move thereon
so that his children will be nearer
school.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Watkins have
I been visiting with friends in Idaho
and returned a few days ago, but will
1 not remajn but go to some lower alti
tude for the benefit of Mrs. Watkin's
health.
( Rig Ice Plant Sold.
A. Lun sold his ice pond and nine
acres of land to Chris Johnson a few
days ago. Mr. Johnson will now go
into the ice business.
Walter Cool has been wrestling
with an attack of pneumonia the past
few days.
Lon Davis sold eight cars of cattle
to parties from Weiser the latter part
of last week and they were immedi
ately shipped to that point for feed
ing. R. H. Lewis is very proud of the
fact that he took third prize on his
cattle at the Portland Livestock show.
The stock of Eastern Oregon always
carries off the ribbons for their own
ers as we have some very fine stock.
Will Coughanour shipped a car of
cattle and one of hogs last Saturday
to Portland.
'Sloan's Liniment Eases Pain.
Sloan's Liniment is first thought of
mothers for bumps, bruisss and
sprains that are continually happen
ing to children. It quickly penetrates
and soothes without rubbing. Cleaner
f.iid more effective than mussy plas
ters or ointments. For rheumatic . the pains and aches following expos-
acnes, neuralgia pain anu cnai grippy
soreness after colds, Sloan's Liniment
fives prompt relief. Have a bottle
hai.dy for bruises, strains, sprains
and all external pain. For ti-r thou
sands whose work calls them outdoors,
ure are relieved by Sloan's Liniment.

Fifth Avenue looks crystal hard in
the cold winter air. Yet It's the place
of all places to sec what the smart
folk of the world's greatest metropolis
wear. Recently we ran across Blanche
Sweet, Vivian Martin and Mae Murray,
all stars In Paramount Pictures, stroll
ing leisurely down the Avenue, and
we sketched their "last words in fash
ions." Here they are. To the left,
Miss Sweet's latest hat, and in the cen
ter the hat worn by Vivian Martin.
To the right is the newly created sport
suit beautiful Mae Murray wore, and
when you see them together their
every move Is a picture.
