"THE STORM"
Lanky-Paramount Drama Is of a High
Order of Quality. Ik-viewed

A Rood sound drama, capitally pro
duced and finely enacted. All this
may be freely said of "The Storm," a
play by Beatrice C. Do Mille, and
which will bo presented at the Ar
cade today and tomorrow.
Miss De Mille's scenario compels
admiration, for it presents situations
which aro tinctured with a bit of orig
inality, the characters are human and
the general effectiveness of the con
struction is, indeed, something over
which to grow enthusiastic.
The central churacter is a young
girl who lives in a cottage near n
secluded lake with her studious and
absent-minded father, an ex-college
professor. At the beginning of the
play a thcologicul student who is
camping at the lake receives a letter
from the bishop advising him of his
nearness to an old friend who has re
tired from active work and is living at
the lake. The daughter is being
brought up a pagan and the bishop
hopes Avery will seek her out and
open her eyes to the beauties of reli
gion. Avery and Natalie meet often, the
topic of thoir conversation being reli
gion. But one of these meetings
reaches a disastrous conclusion. For
both, whilo stranded on a smnll islnnd
during a storm, succumb to an impulse
having its birth in their strong at
traction for each other. Before they
leave the island Avery proposes mar
riage but it is evident thnt he docs
not love Natalie and she refuses to
accept his viewpoint, claiming she
would feel herself guilty of n contin
uance of the wrong were she to marry
him when there is no love.
The following year Avery's close
friend, a millionaire, goes to the lake
for a few days' outing. But the days
stretch into weeks because Fielding
has developed a deep affection for
Natalie. He asks her to marry him
and though she hesitates long, the
persistence of Fielding and love itself,
persuade her to accept. News of this
forthcoming marriage brings Avery
to the lake. Fielding proposes that
the marriage take place the follow
ing day and that Avery perform the
ceremony. In a scene with Natalie
that night Avery is not only unsuc
cessful in trying to force Natalie to
draw back but he is driven by her to
agree to perform the marriage serv
ice. At the ceremony, however, Na
talie breaks under the strain and she
relates the circumstances of her one
transgression. Naturally, Fielding is
stunned ibut his recovery is quick and
he commands Avery to proceed with
the service. i
The story loses much in bein
printed as it is above, for it is not
possible to add the touches contrib
uted by a director who makes evi
dent his marked ability in the visual
ization of every scene and players of
such experience and talents as Miss
Blanche Sweet, Theodore Roberts,
Thomas Meighan and Richard Ster
ling. Miss Sweet's Natalie is the best
thing we hnve seen her do in a long
while. As for Mr. Roberts, one can
only fall back on superlatives in nn
endeavor to describe his delightful
and life-giving characterization. Thos.
Meighan is at his own admirable best
as Robert Fielding and Richard Ster
ling is most effective as Avery.
"The Storm" is an excellent drama.
Of this there can be no doubt and its
real worth will be proved when its
public is given the opportunity to see
the picture.

Sherry's Last Showing Today.
John W. Noble, West Point man,
and former lieutenant in the United
States army, directed "The Brand of
Cowardice," the stirring Mexican bor
der play with Lionel Barrymore and
Grace Valentine as co-stars, which
will be the five-reel Mctro-Rolfe fea
ture here ut the Sherry theatre, last
time today.
The play calls for much precision
as to military life and Mr. Noble sup
plied this necessary element. Anyone
who has a knowledge of army life
knows that when a regular soldier is
drilling under a West Pointer, that
soldier is all attention from start to
finish. If he isn't well, something
happens. Similar conditions prevail
ed when "The Brand of Cowardice"'
was produced under the direction of
Mr. Noble. Everything was "atten
tion," from beginning to end' and the
result is a screen production of un
usual quality.
Mr. Noble, who supervised and di
rected the great Metro screen master
piece, "Romeo and Juliet," entered
West Point at the close of his high
school days, went into the army and
was a lieutenant in the Spanish
American war. He was wounded
while fighting in the Phillipines,
where he served with great credit.
The destruction of grasshopper eggs
by fall plowing, disking, and harrow
ing is recommended when practicable.

Train Reaches Oregon This Afternoon
After Trip to Toledo, Ohio
The northwestern special, carrying
Overland auto dealers, newspapermen
and bankers home from Toledo, Ohio,
arrived in Oregon this noon, reaching
Huntington scvernl hours late.
Its arrival in La Grande occurred
shortly after 3 o'clock this afternoon.
With it were a half dozen men from
Union and Wallowa counties.
La Grande Ordinance Copied.
Hereafter it is going to be hard for
peddlers to work in Prairie City with
out first procuring a license, if the
ordinance that was taken up by tho
council last Monday night and read
for the first time, is passed at the
next meeting. The ordinance is copied
from one now in effect in La Grando
and makes the transient dealer in
merchandise pay a license or quit.

PAGE'S RESIGNATION DENIED
BY LANSING.
Washington, Dec. 11. (United
Press) The Whitehouse has refused
to comment on rumors that Walter
Hines Page, ambassador to Britain,
will resign. Secretary of State Lan
sing said: "Never heard it. There
never was any such indication." It
was known for several months Page
has decided to return to his private
business but disliked to resign fear
ing it would cause the administration
embarrassment.
Limestone soils in general are par
ticularly well suited to alfalfa, but
even such lands are frequently acid
and require liming to grow this crop
successfully.
