Reply to Some Religious Queries
La Grande, Dec. 5. (To the Edi
tor) On reading the courteous note
asking me certain questions by an
anonymous correspondent, T. E. D., I
was reminded of an experience a the
ological candidate is said to have had
nt t.lin hnnds of his examiners. When
he entered the room they told him:
"You have five minutes to discuss the
following subjects, the Being of God
and the Immortality of the Soul."
As the questions asked by T. E. D.
have been debated by the keenest
minds, and volumes have been viit
ten on them, I, who pretend to neither
scholarship nor menial acumen, can
hardly hope to satisfy my questioner,
especially in the brief space tho edi
tor would be willing to grant in his
columns. However, I long ago de
termined if a man asked me a rea
sonable question from sincere mo
tives, I would try to give him an an
swer to the best of my ability, even
if it were manifestly inadequate.
Question First: "Will you kindly
explain why there are two creations
mentioned in the Bible: Gen. 1st and
2nd chapters, and what was the na
ture of each?"
Answer: There are not two crea
tions but two accounts of one and the
same creative event. Why there are
two is probably that both arc neces
sary for our learning, God being the
judge. Besides it is a customary
Oriental trait to give two accounts of
the same occurrence, one in general
terms and the other in the more par
particular details. Tho first account
deals mainly with the creation as the
work of God, but the second- is fo
cussed on a particular part of God's
creation, man and his moral develop
ment. This is in preparation to ex
plain all that follows in regard to
man's probation, fall and restoration.
Difficulties have been found in har
monizing these two accounts, but
there always seem to me to bo super
ficial. One must remember that these
accounts were written in the first
place to people who had no knowledge ; I
of cosmogony, geology and kindred j ,
sciences, and who spoke and thought
pictoi ially, with often a most sub-.
lime disregard for accuracy in detail. J
. Question Two: "Do the Scriptures i
teach that the Father and the Son are
one and the same identity?"
Answer: I am not sure what is
meant by thnt question. If it means
one and the same individual like an
actor in two separate roles, tho an
swer is no. Our Lord Jesus Christ as
serted His oneness with His Father,
I and mv Father (we) are one.
But He makes a personal distinction
between Himself and the Father. The
oneness cannot then be of person but
of substance.
To quote from a theological declara
tion: "In the unity of this Godhead
thero bo threo IVrsons, of one sub
stance, power r.nd eternity, tho
Fnther, the Son and the Holy Ghost"
The word person ns used in connection
with tho being of God, does not mean
an individual and is used for wnnt of
a better term. This is not surprising : l
of the Central Office calls to remind

has introduced himself Farrell pre
sents himself at the Bcreton home as
a Central Office man who has been
sent by headquarters to guard the
famous necklace. His suave manner
completely overwhelms Bereton, and
with his man Crabbe, o crooK ot mucn
less subtletv. Farrell is given the
freedom of the place.
Among the guests is a friend of
Bcreton. the son. He calls himself
Dr. Ratcliffc, but Farrell is certain
he has seen him somewhere before.
He is there under pretense of attend
ing- Bertie for illness,
Farrell's opportunity comes to steal
the jewels and they are virtually
within his grasp when Avice Bereton.

and lets the jewels remain. The next

ill. During the valet's absence, Far
rell has accused Bertie of taking the
jewels and exacts from him a com
plete confession without any of the
guests knowing about it. He gets the
jewels out of Ratcliffe's bag just as
Blaisdell of the Central Office makes
his appearance. How Farrell es
capes is one of the most masterly epi
sodes ever shown upon the screen.

Let him try conscientiously to do
this and he will be headed aright.
