Cold Wave Hits North Powder

North Powder, Nov. 21. Special)
Mr. Simpson, an aged man living on
his homestead near tho Buckeye mine
died a few days ago very suddenly. He
mm ucen in poor nealtn for some
time but was not thought to be anf
worso than usual when death cam-3.
The services were held at the Sloan
undertaking parlors and the remains
were laid to rest in tho city csmetery.
His wife, Mrs. Simpson, is reported
very sick and was not able to attend
the services held for her husband.
Mr. Lewis shipped out 14 cars of
cattle on Saturday, Nov. 18th. At the
price beef cattle are at present Mr.
Lewis realized a nice sum from the
sale of his fine beef cattle.
Dr. Law was called to 'Medical
Springs on professional business Fri
day. Elmer McAllister sustained some in
juries and came very near being hurt
seriously when he was hit by a heavy
timber in working on a bridge in
Thief valley. He was moving some
heavy timbers with a team when one
of the timbers hit a bank skidding it
to one side hitting Elmer with such
force that it bruised him severely. His
wounds were dressed by Dr. Irvine.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Al Hutchin
son on Nov. 16 a daughter.
The cold wave struck this place
with vengeance a few days since.
Fourteen below is reported and the ice
is frozen on the big ice ponds so that
skating is the order of the day. The
young people are enjoying it to the
fullest extent, and the pond is well
filled with skaters both in the day
time mid evening.
The North Powder high school di
feated the Haines team on their grid
iron on Nov. 13th and defeated thorn
on a score of 25 to nothing. The
Haines team played- on the North
Powder grounds on Nov. 18th and waa
defeated on a score of 62 to nothing.
North Powder has a strong team for
their size and it is safe to say that
other high schools will hear from
North Powder in the near future. Mr.
Hadley, the coach, will soon have a
team hard to beat.
Mr. Orbum Saunders stopped off be
tween trains on Nov. 15th.. He got a
telegram on his return to' Pendleton
from North Powder stating the fact
that his mother was very low and to
come at once. Ho took the first train
back and stopped over here for a few
hours to catch the fast train for Chi
cago. Mr. Saunders friends hope for
the recovery of his mother. She has
been an invalid for a year. Mr.
Saunders5 father died a few months
ago.
The Friends in Council club held
a session at the home of Mrs .Rierdan
on Nov. 15th. Several of the members
who live in town were away but the
country members made up for the less
in numbers. Dorothy Rierdan fur
nished music for the occasion. Re
freshments were served and all had a
fine time.
The Moody sale held on Nov. 15th cn
Wolfe creek three miles out of town
was well attended and most of the
stock sold at fair prices considering
the high prices of hay and grain.
The bridge on the North Powder
river between Baker county and Union
county is rough. There had been sev
eral planks fitted in to take the place
of these worn out which are a great
deal thicker than the others and the
road man has tried to hew them
smooth with an ax. The effect on ve-

North Powder has not had enough
politics and will soon have a city elec
tion on Dec. 5th. There will be elect
ed at this time a mayor, three council
men, treasurer and recorder. It is to
be hoped good men will be selected for
these places and men that will work
for the good of the city.
Mrs. J. B. Shanks returned from
Union a few days ago and will now
remain permanently in charge of her
bakery.
Mr. Simmons and wife from Idaho
Falls is in town looking for a location.
Mr. Simmons is a barber by trade and
will do well to locate here as we have
room for a good man in the barber
trade.
Madame Rumor has it that arrangements-
have been completed for the
erection of a forty-room hotel on the
site occupied by the old hotel which
burned down some years ago. Tho
building will be 40 ft. by 60 ft.
It will be built of brick and ce
ment and will be one of the beet
buildings in the city.
