Nearly nineteen hundred years ago the son of God, as he stood in a temple in Jerusa
lem, was asked, "What is the first commandment of all?"
He replied, "'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God'. This is the first commandment,
and the second is like unto it; 'Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.' There is
no commandment greater than these." Today the great, sorrowful eyes of this same
Son of God gaze down upon blackened fields where the mangled bodies of men arc
strewn as grains of wheat, upon flaming, s battered hamlets and stricken firesides.
As He listens to the screaming of the shells, the crashing of monstrous guns, all
the ghastly symphony of the leddest war mankind has ever known, His heart must
recognizo the bitter truth in the sfcatem ent of one of the world's foremost educators
that in nineteen centuries Civilization has failed to accept honesly the teachings of
Jerus Christ.
'This is an allegorical story of a war that hns h-.ughed at the wo.-ld's flaunting
boast of a higher progress.
It does not concern itself as to which si de is in the right or wrong; but deals with
those ranks which are paying the grim pen alty th ranks of Humanity.
If the awful trial of battle stretches vividly though the scenes of the narrative,
:'t is in the hope that a shocked and appall cd world may henceforth devote itself more
earnestly in the cause of peace.
Let our Civilization not be a mockery of our cherished ideals, but rather a synonym
of that glorious work Humanity.
Dedicated to that vast, pitiful army whose tears have girdled the universe the
mothers of the dead.

The great photoplay "Civilization" should be seen by every
grown person, and especially by those who are interested in ques
tions which bring nations into commercial contact.
The man or woman who is inclined to believe in "Prepared
ness' or in "War" should by all means see this play.
On the other hand the one w ho is bent on maintaining
"Peace" will find this play very instructive as well as entertaining-

critic, I have no hesitancy in saying .that in my opinion "Civi
lisation" is the best thing yet put' before the public by way of the
picture reel. This recommendation is given without any solicita
tion on .the part of any picture company.
