PATTISON BROTHERS

"The No-Good Guy." the new Tri-angle-Ince
release starring William
Collier, follows out the usual Triangle
policy of incorporating in one story
something for al ages. Therefore, in
this film there is ample provision
made for the children.
Collier, in character as Jimmy
Coghlan, arrives home after a wild
evening and prepr.res for bed. His
valet, hardest-working man in the
world next to the proverbial one
armed paper-hanger with the hives,
tries to put him to beJ.
He insists on smoking a cigarette
The valet tries to persuade him not
to tor tear he will set tho house alnre
and. findinir his Dleadinsrs of no avail,
undertakes to takehe cigarette away
from him. But Jimmy holds it in his
teeth, and the valet has a bad five
minutes.
At last Jimmy gets rid of his trou
blesome valet and has his room to
himself. He goes for a drink; but
just as his fingers are about to close
on the decanter, decanter skips away
Horn him to another place on the
table. Tho glass does the same thing;
so at last Jimmy gives it up as a
problem too difficult for human solu
tion, and prepares for bed.
As he is about to put his foot into
bed, the bed slips away from him. He
goes after it. It plays a game of
hide-and-seek with him about a room
already crowded with furniture. In
short, 'before Jimmy has succeeded in
retiring, he has made a last contribu
tion to the gaiety of nations and to
the children of nations in particular.

Clerk Charged With Trying to Date
Girl.
Portland, Oregon, October 5,
Frank Blake, clerk in a local paper
company, who was arrested by Pa
trolman C. S. Shad last night on a
charge of disorderly conduct m try
ing to "date" a girl with whom he
had come in touch through nn adver
tisement for a stenographer, failed to

morning and his bail of $100 was for
feited. Blake was arrested at Hrovlway and
Washington street where he wan

who had applied to him ftjr a position.
The girl reported his conduct after
the first interview to Mrs Lola G.

the girl when she went to keep the
appointment, and caused Blake's ar

A Curioua American Custom.
I do not know that Viscount Kaneko
can foe reckoned among the great men
of Japan, but he is certainly one ol
her most interesting sons. He has
been, prominent in governmental and
legislative circles, but he is unpopu
lar in some quarters because of his
pro-Americanism. No one in Japan
understands America and Americans
better, and, as he says, he has given
seventeen years of his life to explain
ing American ways to the Japanese.
No wonder that he understands
America, for he was educated in the
Rice Grammar School ot Boston, in
the Boston Latin School and Harvard
College, and Mount Desert and Cape
Ann are as familiar to him as to any
New Englander. He was in college
with Colonel Roosevelt and knows him
well.
"I have camped out with American
boys," he said, "and lived with them
in their homes. In every home they
had family prayers, and at first when
they kneeled down I didn't know what
to do, but I soonVeamed."
In this respect his experience was,
I am afraid, unique. The Christian
Herald. ,

A One-Logged Octogenarian's Feet.
Count Okuma's physical courage,
too, has often been put to the test, as
we have seen, and never more severely
! than at the recent coronation of the
reigning emperor, when it was his
duty to go up the long (light of stairs
lending to the throne on his knees to
present to the emperor the address of
the people.
It would have been a hard climb for
a young man with two sound knees.
It must hnve been torture to the
Count, with only the stump of a leg
and the weight of nearly fourscore
years added. But he never flinched,
and on ten million postcards nnd on
as many more souvenir cups, plates,
napkins, tablecloths and furoshikis he
is represented as climbing toilsomely
those stairs, sacred to every Japanese,
to the august presence on the throne.
It is currently reported that the flesh
of his leg was raw long before he
reached the top, but no one was al
lowed to suspect it at the time. The
Christian Herald.
