Deceased was born in Iowa but had
been in Oregon for a number of years,
being engaged in ranching and other

ANOTHER RECRUIT SIGNS UP.
South Carolina Man Enlists and Has
Gone to Clackamas.
Allison H. Brown, whose home is in
Marion, South Carolina, has enlisted
and was last night sent to Clackamas
by Recruiting Officer Clark. With
stiff demand for men to work at vari
ous trades and at common labor, Re
cruiting Officers are lir.ding it hard
to interest young men. The county,
and city too, lor that matter, has
extremely few idle men, and when a
man is at work with good pay in
sight, recruiting officers have found it
difficult to interest him, in that there
is no immediate crisis. ,
"Many don't rcalze tho absolute ne
cessity of a well-organized national
guard for future emergencies," said
Captain Clark in commenting on en
listments. Telegraphic oiders to stop recruit
ing for the Second Montana infantry,
the 10th squadron of Utah cavalry,
have reached the office in La Grande.
UNION COUNTY MAN IS DEAD
G. L. West Drops Dead at Baker
Well Known in La Grande.
Baker, Oct. 7. Death came very
suddenly yesterday morning about
8:30 o'clock to Guy L. West at his
home on Eighth street, after he had
returned from the depot, where he had
been with Mrs. West to see some
friends off on the early morning train.
Mr. West, who was in the general
merchandise business with D. F. Ba
ker on Center street, intended to stop
at the store when they came up from
the depot, but as he had complained of
not feeling well, his wife persuaded
him to go on home. Shortly after ar
riving home he was seized with a
fainting spell, Mrs. Went immediately
hurrying to Dr. Currey'3 drug store
for help. Dr. Currey was at the Os
termoor hotel and was hastily sum
moned, but when he arrived at the
