JUDGE COBLE!
A Real Friend.
Sir Thomas Lipton started his ca
reer with scarcely a cent, but with the
priceless assets of industry and thrift
m his make-up. And he says: "Every
dollar, above necessary expenses, that
I earned I saved, not that I really
loved money. I have often been asked
to define the true secret of success. It
is thrift in all its phases, and prin
cipally, thrift as applied to saving. A
young man may have many friends,
but will find none so steadfast, so con
stant, so ready to respond to his
wants, so capable of pushing him
ahead, as a little brown book with the
name of a 'bank on its cover."
Victor Moore Coming.
For tha presentation of "The
Clown," which will be ieen at the Ar
cade on Friday and Saturday with
Victor Moore, the celebrated comedian
in the title role, the Jesse L. Lasky
company rented an entire circus for
three days. This traveling organiza
tion happened to be playing near the
I.askv studio at the time the picture
was being produced and was promptly
secured with all its performers and
equipment. To secure the audience,
the Lasky company merely announced
in the daily papers that the citizens of
Los Angeles were invited to be their
guests at the performance, end hun
dreds were turned away. Victor
Mocre played the role of the principal
c'own, but his main support was made
up of the regular artists of the circus.

SHERRY'S
"East Lynne" a Great Triumph.
Theda Bara, in a moving picture re
vival of the famous stage, long-run
favorite, "East Lynne," is offered to
the public by William Fox in a photo
drama even excelling that star's and
that noted producer's previous tri
umphs in master picture making at
Sherry's today. The old drama of
English country life is enacted in all
trueness to its powerful form by an
all-star cast in, support of Miss Bara,
including those picture favorites,
Claire Whitney, Stanhope Wheat
croft, W. H. Tooker, the charming
"movie villain;" Stuart Holmes, and
other actors and actresses of sound
reputations on stage and screen.
In writing the scenario from the
novel "East Lynne" and the play
"East Lynne," Miss Mary Murillo re
tains in its picture from all the dra
matic and literary force, but increases
the scope of the story along lines only
possible in moving pictures. Bertram
Bracken, who directs the pictures
starring Miss Bara, selected scenery
true to type in old-fashioned spots in
the East, where the buildings and
gardens appeared quite like those of
rural England, and the interior scenes,
taken in the fox studios in New Jer
sey, show genuine old English antique
lurnisnings, which lend a color unusu
ally correct, even considering the us
ual accuracy of high class picture pro
autions.

ARMLESS WONDER WANTS
SPEAKING DATE.
.Man Who Without Arms Can Put on
Own Collar, Is On Tour.
Some time ago Stanford Steele of
Dallas, Tex., was in La Grande on a
business trip and at that time an
nounced that the noted Judge Corley
of Dallas would motor through La
Grande on his way to the coast. The
distinction this particular judge holds
that without arms he does about
everything anybody can do extended
mention of his feats were made in the
Observer at that time. Now Mr.
Steele writes as follows from Dallas
concerning Judge Corley:
"Editor Observer: Judge Corley
will leave here in September on his
tour of the Northwest and will be in
La Grande about September 28th. We
have so far been unable to get in
touch with any organization there
that will stand sponsor for his ap
pearance. He has no charge for his
lecture but we have arranged for him
to cret actual expense out ot the trip
at least. There are a few open dates
and I am writing you this to know if
you would try to assist in having
some organization, church, ladies so
ciety, lodge or anything else to have
him appear under their auspices.
Judge Corley will draw a large crowd
not only in the town but Irom the
country. He has nothing to sell and
no political speech to make, but has
a lecture that no other man in the
world has or has ever delivered.
The expense is now cut down to $25
for each date and be less if we get
other dates. At popular prices Judge
Corley will fill any auditorium. Any
movement you make to assist us or
possibly you could call on some of
the leading societies, lodges or
churches for us if you have the time
and inclination, and if you do it will
certainly be appreciated. They can
net a nice sum for their treasuries be
sides seeing and hearing a man that
will be heard on this trip in Denver,
Colorado Springs, Maintou, Salt Lake,
Pueblo, Grand Junction, Seattle, Port
land, Tacoma, Butte, Sheridan and
Kansas City.
"I trust that you will fully realize
that this is not a money making prop
osition on our part but as it is Judge
Corley's vacation tima he will do as
he always does, go out and do some
thing for his country. I was out on
my vacation at the time I passed
through l& Grande last February.
