examine the assessment roll, correct
all errors in valuation, descriptions

tensive study of tenantry, with texts
for sermons, the history of agricul
ture nnd a plea for shecpraising, were
on the program at a session of the
country school for ministers.
Professor R. T. RufTner, in his talk
on "Sheep Raising'," took the divines
by surprise when he flashed a gen
ealogical table of Moses, drawn up in
regular pedigree fashion, to illustrate
his remarks upon the principles of
breeding.

Bulk of Grain in Pendleton Country
Now In Sack.
Pendleton, Aug 29. The bulk of
Umatilla county's five million bushel
1916 wheat crop is in the sack and
this week should bring to a close a
large portion of the harvesting in the
county. Reports are that the crop
this year was about normal The gen
eral average throughout the county
was between 35 and 40 bushels to an
acre.
Teh highest average reported was
that of James Hill of Helix whose
grain on the home place went 52
bushels to the acre. Arnold Plunting
of Helix harvested 3200 sacks or ap
proximately 7200 bushels of wheat
from 140 acres, an average of 51
bushels to the acre. J. B. Kennedy
who has a farm in the Helix section
reports his grain averaged 45 bushels
to the acre.
In other sections the yield was a
little below average. Robert Jones
who farms north of town was hit
considerable with a hail storm in
June. Joe Snyder, north of the city,
had a 34 bushel crop as did William
McCarty in the south Cold springs
district.
Forty bushel wheat in the Helix
and Adams country was plentiful this
year. A number of the big farmers
as George Peringer and Will Wyrick
are unable to estimate the yield as
they have considerable harvesting yet
to do.
Of the 1916 crop there is probably
aboutahalf contracted to a local grain
dealers. Most of this has been sold
at from $1 to $1.15 a bushel.

Ultra Modern Pet Hears Master's
Voice and Obeys.
Rochester, N. Y., Aug. 28. A dis
tance of seven miles between such a
dog as Nipper and his master, Wil
liam G. McKay, of Penn Yan, is noth
ing at all, for Nipper happens to be
one of those ultra-modern dogs who
use the telephone and other modern
conveniences.
Mr. Mc Kav went to a f riend s cot
tage on 'Lake Keuka to spend the
night fishing. The next morning,
when he was ready to return home,
Mr. McKav whistled for Nipper, but
the dog did not appear and his master
returned home without him.
An hour or so later Mr. McKay's
friend called him on the telephone and
informed him that Nipper had re
turned, but that all efforts on his part
to send him home had been futile.
"That's all right," said Mr. McKay
"Just lift him to the telephone and
put the receiver to his ear."
His friend followed instructions and
told Mr. MacKay to deliver his mes
sage. "Nipper, come home right away,"
said Mr. McKay sternly.
Nipper barked, "Yes, sir, all right!"
or something like that into the mouth

dashed madly for Penn Yan, covering
