Old Book Display.
What old books have you?
For ten days, beginning, Aug. 30th
we shall display in our window the
oldest and most curious school books
we can find or which may be brought
in. This display of books used in
past generations will be interesting
to young and old alike.
It will be interesting: to know what
old text books there are in the com
munity, and we will give a beautiful
six dollar library lamp as a premium
for the oldest book brought in during
the exhibition. All books will be
carefully looked after and will be re
turned at the close of the exhibit.

John Minnick, well known Union
resident, was in La Grande this
morning en route to Evans to see his
brother, Alfred, who was reported to
have been perhaps fatally wounded
in the fight with robbers last night.
Winfield Eckley, who has been at
Corvallis since the closing of a four
years' electrical engineering course
at O. A. C, arrived home this morn
ing and will remain on a visit of a
few days before proceeding east.
Miss Verne Gilmour, who was last
year a teacher in the fifth grade at
the Greenwood school, writes from
her home in Denver where she has
been during the summer vacation de
clining the place of teacher for the
coming year.
i Mrs. Lettie Markham, aunt of D. M.
I Hunt, and her daughter Ruth have
ibeen visitine in La Grande the past
few days and left this morning for
their home in Gowanda, N. Y. They
have been on a tour of the northwest
and are especially pleased with
Grande Ronde.
Rev. Father Moore, formerly in
charge of the Catholic church in La
Grande, is here for a stay of a week
with Father Driscoll and during his
! visit here he will be pleased to meet
his old friends. Father Moore left La
Grande 15 years ago and the most of
the time since he has been chaplain at
I the state penitentiary at Salem. In
addition to and indepentantly of his
church affiliations Father Moore has
a large list of friends in La Grande.
