Trapshooters Championship Begun.
St. Louis, Aug. 22. The annual na
tional amateur trapshooters cham
pionship doubles and singles are be
ing shot at the Grand American
Handicap trapshooting tournament
here today. A thousand trapshooters
and 25,000 visitors from throughout
the country are present. Fifty pairs
of doubles are being thrown in the
first championship event.
The national amateur singles will
be shot this afternoon late. This
event will be 100 targets, 16 yards'
rise. It is for the winners of the var
ious state championships. In case the
champion cannot attend the runner-up
is allowed to take his place.
Also this afternoon there will be a
fifty-bird event for the women shoot
ers. The Grand Handicap itself will
be shot day after tomorrow. It will
be 100 targets at 16 and 23 yards.
Lack of War Orders Shuts Factory.
Montevideo, Aug. 23. Lack of war
orders for frozen meats has caused
the closing of Frigorifico Uruguoyo,
or Uruguayan Meat Freezing Plant in
the district of Cerro and the conse
quent throwing of 2,000 men out of
employment. Unemployment is rap
idly reaching a critical stage in tho
district, as the number of unemployed
has doubled several times by the clos
ing of allied industries. More men
are being thrown out of work daily.
Much suffering has resulted. Stock
farmers in the interior have also suf
fered big slumps in the prices paid
for their product. The belligerents in
Europe do not want any more of these
meats right now and there are no
ships for the plant's production to be
shipped elsewhere in.
