sis toward the Pacific coast is the in
formation from New York that the
newly-discovered serum to check the
dreaded disease is showing encour
aging results. With Montana already
infected with this terrible malady, it
is not at all impossible or impractical
that Oregon or tho Grande Rondo
valley for that matter might some
day feel the sting of infantile paraly
sis; on the other hand now that New
York doctors have found a serum of
effectiveness, much of the alarm for
the future is reduced.
The current edition of the New
York World deals with this serum
question in the following words:
Thirty-two ounces of blood
enough to make a pint of precious
serum was taken at the Willard
Parker hospital yesterday from the
veins of six persons who called in re
sponse to The World's appeal to form
er victims of infantile paralysis who
wish to aid present and future suffer
ers. By tomorrow the serum derived
from this blood will be ready for use
in treating sixteen babies, or from
eight to twelve older children, half of
whom will become permanent crip
ples unless this treatment saves them.
Fourteen children were treated yes
terday with scrum derived from the
blood of those who responded to the
appeal on Monday or Tuesday. It is
too early yet to determine what the
results are going to be, but so far as
they could be judged in a single day
they were favorable. i
More significant are the results ob
tained in a group of six cases that
have been under treatment three days.
Three of these patients were not par
alyzed when the treatments began,
and much to the satisfaction of the
physicians, two of them continue in
that condition, though the time at
which paralysis might be expected to
set in is past. In fact, one of the two
is out bf danger. In the third case,
paralysis has appeared. The physi
cians believe the serum was admin
istered a little too late. The three
other patients were paralyzed at the
time of treatment. They seem to be
improving.
Of the six volunteers who respond
ed yesterday, only two would permit
their names to be published. One of
them was Miss Amy Olidort, the fourteen-year-old
daughter of the Vice
President of the People's hospital.
She had the disease in infancy and
when she heard there was a chance to
help some child younger than herself
she told hor parents that she wanted
to give some of her blood. She called
at the Willard Parker with her family
physician and seemed not to mind her
experience in the least.
Another who responded to yester
day's appeal was Miss Grace M. Lytle
of No. 607 Fifth avenue, who hnd suf
fered from poliomyeltis nine years
ago. She bravely watched eight
ounces of blood flow from her veins.
Another, who insisted that his name
be kept secret, is a student in a uni
versity. A fourth is a member of an
old and wealthy New York family.
The student was not very strong and
gave but three ounces. The other
man gave eight. He told Dr. Zingher
he would try to raise a fund with
which blood might be bought from
those not willing to give it on any
other basis. '
New Yorkers were not the only
ones who responded to the call. By
letter and telephone came messages
from New Jersey residents who want
ed to make the sacrifice. A letter
from Washington offered the blood of
a comparatively recent sufferer from
the disease. In the last named case

arrangements will be made to have
the blood drawn there and sentvhere.
Already a new use for the serum
has suggested itself. This is in the
case of children who are exposed be
cause their brothers or sisters have
the disease, dn hundreds of instances
in the present epidemic the disease
has swept through whole families be
cause there was no means of preven
tion. There are scientific reasons for
believing the serum may hold the
power of preventing an exposed child
from becoming a victim. It is being
tried cautiously along these lines.
Three children whose brothers and
sisters are ill were inoculated yester-
uay.
Arrangements are also being made
to place the serum in the hands of
skilled field workers, who will at once
inject the serum into the spinal canals
of patients in whom the paralysis has
not set in. Removal to contagious
disease hospitals will follow.
After the mayor's advisory com
mittee yesterday had approved the de
cision to delay the opening of the city
schools, it was decided to postpone
announcement of the exact date on
which they will be opened. Repre
sentatives of the parochial schools
said these institutions will remain
closed as long as do the public
schools, which means that fully 1,
000,000 children will have at least a
month added to their vacations.

River county are preparing an active
campaign against the proposed bill to
allow manufacture of beer in Oregon.
