pine or yellow fir cord wood, to be

Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Norval, visitors
from Montana, were up from Elgin
today. Mr. Norval was formerly a
well known resident of Summerville
but of late years has been making his
home in Montana.
Mrs. John A. Rogers is with the La
Grande colony on the beach, leaving
her husband "Ola" to look out for
himself, which is a situation deplor
able in some ways but on the whole
serves him about right.
Mr. and Mrs. George Stoddard have
gone to Wallowa Lake park where
thev will join Mrs. David Eccles, of
Salt Lake, who left for that resort
yesterday. They will remain a few
days at the lake for an outing.

Good Thing Yuan Died, Says Jap
Tokio, July 15. (By mail) "It is
not easy to say whether the death of
Yuan Shi Kai will prove advantage
ous to Japan. But I think it is for
tunate for China that he died, in that
his death helped to settle the troubled
situation in that country."
Baron Gonsako Hayashi, newly ap
pointed Japanese minister to China,
thus discussed the situation in the big
republic in an interview here today.
Baron navnshi criticized the attitude
of many Japanese towards China, but
said he could not now say whether
there will be a change in the policy
of the Japanese government.
"Yuan Shi Kai went looking for
trouble when he attempted to reestab
lish the monarchy," he said. "It is
a question whether the warning given
by 'the Japnnose government was
good or bad. If the warning had to
be given, why was it not given in a
sportsmanlike manner, instead of con-
