Ariz., July 25. It is with pleasure
' ihat I am able to write you at this
time to inform you of the doings of
the 2d Idaho and especially of the
'hoys from dear old Pendleton.
Perhaps it is known to 'you that

jination and typhus inoculations with-
out one being sent to the hospital. In
fact, the whole company is first, in the
TOjiment with 'only 1 one man 1 in the
'iio3)ital as compared to some of the
companies who had 20 and 30 on sick
-duty. This, is a good reerod. We re
eived 'out last 1 injection yesterday
-and every man reported for calls
thenic exercise at 8 p. m.
f Company Getting Into Shape.
The company is slowly but surely
being rounded in to shape by Copt.
Haling and Lieutenant Boiling. . Lieu
tenant Boiling, who is a regular army
dill sergeant, promoted to ,tho rank
of first lieutenant of our company, is
rtainly a competent man, having
"had 18 years' service in the regulars.
;At last we arc in, Nogales, Arizona.
'-Camped only two miles from the bor-
-der on one of the many rock hills sur
rounding the town and in the midst of
'tarantulas and centipedes, many of
which, the "nuts" of the camp have
captured as pets. Tho water hero is
fair hut wo all enjoy it more when
i taken as a shower bath than be a
itdrink.
On Patrol Duty Soon.
"There are with us here one brigade
vt California guard, three regiments
f Connecticut guard, one battalion of
Utah mounted infantry and the 12th
infantry and 7th artillery, U. S. A.
Border patrol is being done by the
'12th U. S. A. nnd California guard.
Our turn on the patrol will come in
- about a month. In the meantime we
'.must be content with camp duty, soda
pop and watermelons. Aside from
"Ahes6 luxuries we have been issued
xnHir extra clothing so that when we
are not drilling or eating wo can rest
ourselves by washing our perspiration
-.soaked clothes. .
Nogales Not Half Bad.
However, Nogales is not so bad as
presence, and especially the young la
dies, as every soldier had a lady that
wanted one.
Then, when .we received moving or
deru on the 6th of July every mother
and daughter in the city prepared a
basket lunch which lusted us nearly
all of our journey to Nogales, which
tooK us four nig'hts- and three and
one half days, !, Our first stop was at
Salt Luke City, where we laid over
foe seven' hours." The rest of ' the
story of that lay over had best not be
mentioned, other than to say that Ida
ho is extremely dry and Salt Iake is
nice and wet. - ' - (
From Salt Lake we proceeded to
La Vegas, Nev., which is also open,
but we were not there too long.
Our next stop was at San Berna
dino and Cqlton, , Calif, where we
chttngod to tho Southern Pacific and
continued "to Yuma, Ariz.
Devil Lived at Yuma.
This is the hottest pluce on earth,
in fact it is the last place on earth re
sided, in by His Imp.. Majesty the
Devil and which he gave up in disgust
because he wanted a pluce where he
could burn coal. For drinking pur
poses they have no water but a light
gruel composed of mud and scorched
water. Perhaps the people in Yuma
come to relish this drink but thank
God we were only there one hour.
Frcm Y'uma we traveled by night over
the beautiful, silent, desert to awak
en at break of day in Tuscan, at which
place we enjoyed the luxuries of Ireal
ice and great bogs of milk given us
by the youngjadies of -the city, j
After stopping two hours there we
took up the last lap of our journey to
Nogales, the' mdnotony of which !was
broken by races and battles with' liz
ards from which the young guards
men always come forth victorious: and
our spirits began to rise to think that
we were able at least to triumph over
one of our enemies.
"Many Rumors Afloat.
Arriving at Nogales, the 2d Idahi
detrained and pitched camp in record
time. Then followed a period of thr.-i.'
days during which wo were allowed
to rest from our journey with only a
little drill and setting up exercises
mornings. The afternoons were free
to us to devote to sightseeing in town,
of which we all took advantage.
Nogales hi situated on the border,
the international line running cast
and west through the town, dividing
it into two towns, Mexican and Amer
ican Nogales. There are some very
beautiful residences on the American
side, although the majority of them
are adobe.

little of it as we are not allowed to
cross the line. However, we hear all
kinds of stories about Mexican artil
lery being brought into position on
the mountains across the line and all
the way from ten to twenty thousand
troops being camped on the other
sido, hut if one desires to rest easy
it is best to take four or five grains
a little co-operation from the boys at
home
Hope this finds Pendleton as we
left and better if possible, and that
thi: Pendleton mail is more frequent
in Company E and that my last re
murks are noticed.

Hoys Treated Royally.
..The regimont was certainly treated
' ioyally whllo in Boise. Picture shows,
' .dances, soft drinks and in some places
: 4obacoo were freo for the asking.
Even the people of the town, young
: and old, seemed to be glad of our
advertisements. Also letters from
mothers, fathers, sweethearts and
friends are greatly sought and the
boys promise to answer each) letter.
Tolacco and cigarettes are at pres
ent a 1 scarcity in camp as nearly all
the boys are broke and hnvo been for
about a week. Of course, we are not
begging. Oh, no, only trying to get

Section 6 of Sower District No. 1 of
