EARLY SETTLER
WAS MEMBER OF DUNKARD
FAITH WHEN YOUNG.
Recent Demise Drops Curtain on Use
ful Life.
J. W. Dickey's last place of resi
dence was Suver, Polk county, Ore
gon, to which place he removed from
Portland two years ago. A year ago
in June he had a stroke of paralysis
from the effects of which he was a
constant sufferer until the silent mes
senger, Death, came on the 22d of the
present month. He was born in Stark
county, Ohio, on August 13, 1833.
While a child his parents moved to
Ashland county in Ohio where he
spent 'his childhood and youth. In
1850 he went to California by way of
New York and Panama in search of
gold, enduring the hardships conse
quent on the life in the mines and in
farming experiences in California,
when San Francisco was but a village.
After about two years he returned to
Ohio and soon left for the then west
Corydon, Iowa. In April, 1857 he
was united in marriage to Malissa
Baker, who departed this life threo
years ago last May.
In 1803 he with his wife and family
started "across the plains" coming by
horse train to La Grande. The jour
ney was made in three months. How
eventful only persons who came
across the plains in those days can
realize. He helped to build up La
Grande from a field of waving grass
to the city that is now in evidence.
In 18(55 he moved to Albany, Linn
county, returning to La Grande in
181)6, where ho made his home until
about 15 years ago. Ho then went
to Baker but afterward made his
home successively in Tacoma, Para
dise, Cal., and Portland.
In early life he united' with the
brethren commonly known as the
Dunkard church, of which he was a
faithful and loyal member through
out his life. He died as ho lived a
faithful Christian, a loyal and loving
friend. (In 1907 was observed the
golden wedding of himself und wife.
Three days before the death of his
wife occurred the 50th anniversary of
theii wedding.
A son and daughter, an adopted son
and two grand-daughters mourn the
loss of a kind and loving father. He
i3 survived by a brother in Seattlo and
two brothers and a sister in Ohio.
American toes and pocketbooks was
rhown here today at the closing ses
sion of the Illinois Shoe Retailers as
tociatiqn. O. L. Triebel, jr., of
Springfield, secretary, declared prices
for shoes have jumped 20 to 40 per
cent during the last year and it is up
to the consumer to pay the price. De
mand for leather for shoes for the
European armies caused the advance.
Triebel said tan calfskin for shoes
retailing at $5.00 sold at 30 cents a
foot a year ago and now brings 47
cents; men's dull calf leather, for
merly 30 cents,now sells for 44 cents;
white calf for women's shoes, former
ly sold for 28 cents, now sells at 55,
and so on down the line. Linings, lac
ings, eyelets and buttons also have
advanced in price.

"Sine of Men" Novel Photodrama.
The new photodrama, "Sins of
Mer:." in which William Fox presents
Stuart Holmes and Dorothy Bernard
as co-stars, is based on a new "re
ligion," called "Myself," the doctrine
nf pirn thn rnnrl rtf coltish.
nes?. The story of the film works out
.'with remarkable effect.
"Sins of Men," the vital problem
picture just released by William Fox,
i is based on a novel theme, the publica
tion of a book by one of the charac
ters on "Myself," a new philosophy,
I the creed of selfishness. The author's
daughter, a part taken by Dorothy
1 Bernard, one of the stars, is involved
with a relative of the publisher of
the book, a role acted by Stuart
Holmes, who in this film acts as co
star for the first time in Fox pictures,
in which he previously has taken vil
lian parts.
The false doctrines of the philoso-
phi'? 's book are spread to all members
of the two families involved in its au
thorship or publication, bringing ruin
ation, disgrace and deep sorrow. In
cidental to the plot typical German
home life is shown, the author being
nn old German philosopher of the
romantic type, his daughter, through
his earnings, becoming a fashionable
yoing woman of city life.
The story is nn intonse one and
movio fans cannot afford to miss it
at Sherry's.

MYRTLE STEDMAN, PALLAS-PARAMOUNT 8TAR.
I
In ''I'asquale at Arcade this Week-end
ARC A DE
Beautiful Myrtle Stedman appears
mor,e beautiful than ever in her dar
ing and hazardous portrayal of "Mrs.
Martinelli" in George Beban's star
ring vehicle "Pasquaie," which is re
leased by the Oliver Morosco Photo
play Co. on the Paramount program
and will be shown at the Arcade thea
tre Friday and Saturday.
It is easy is see why rich young
"Bob Fulton" is so matlly infatuated
with her. The part of the beautiful,
misunderstood wife, Miss Stedman
plays with finished technique and
feeding. . i
In the great climax of the picture,
when after a terrible automobile
smahup she is rescued from under
rech the blazing Car by her old
friend Pasquaie, who has returned
from the great European war, her ex
pediences were as sensational as the
episodes of the heroine in a "movie"
serial.
