Undoubtedly one of the questions of
vital interest to old residents is, "Can
' horse racing come back in Grande
Ronde?" .
The people at the head of the com
mg meet believe it can. It is to
be hoped so.
"Bud" McAJister said the other day,
"Isn't it strange that thirty-five and
forty years ago when we hardly had
a thousand people in all of Eastern
Oregon we had good horse races?"
They were good races and they were
on the square, too.
At the old fair grounds, located
about four miles -east from "South
La Grande" there was a mile track
to 'be absolutely right the horsemen
said it was a little over a mile, and
they had many good races and they
broke records.
Who, amonR- the old-timers, does
not remember Osceola, the horse
which Gebrge Coggan imported from
England and a horse that could run
so fast that Tie could win a race un
der any kind of a handicap when he

Then there was AJex LeBuff's
Black Queen, a three-year-old picked
up off the range that went from here
to iiaker Uty and beat Sleepy Dave
in 1:41 flat. It required a combina
tion of thoroughbreds, including
Winters Richard III' and Trade Dollar,
to heat Black Queen at u subsequent
race on the track near Union.
Lady Faustina,, a Grant county
horse owned by a woman, made a mile
in the fourth neat in a trotting race
