The Kansas City Red Sox won n
ball game yesterday against La
Grande's team that was marked by
extreme rotteness during just half
the procedure. The half was when
the home squad had the field. Evans
the backstop was out of town and the
infield had to be weakened by switch
ing Slate to the backstop job. That
made it incumbent to put Berry, an
inexperienced player, on first. Ford
was sick and hat compelled Mclnnis
to put Palmer, a youngster, into the
garden, and thus the team was badly
disabled. Seemingly seized with stage
fright at the very excellent ability of
the visitors, the home-guard allowed
four runs in the first inning, and
thereafter were unable to get started.
After that the visiting aggregation
tried its best not to score, but they
just couldn't help it and in the course
of the game some funny plays de
veloped. ' ,
At one point the visitors thought
they hud enough and sent ono of their
own men on the field to help, put out
the baserunners and he did. All in all
it was a laughable affair, but the K. C.
bunch Tinned off some cood fast Dlavs
'at times and threw a little life into
what ordinarily was a dull game. The
pen and usual ability of ft ohce-a-week
team displayed in games with Valley
league clubs, was entirely missing yes
terday. For four innings Mclnnes
struck out seven men, as that was
about the only way open to retire the
visitors. But the gait was too strenu
ous and Speed Meserve then took the
mound and struck out four or five
for the balance of the game. Fletcher,
a southpaw, toyed with the home
guard striking out nine. King was the
only man who could consistently hit
the K. C. emissary in the rifle pit, but
even King had lost his old-time cun
ning at short when it carte to fielding.
The crowd was a small one.
By careful playing the visiting
speed artists kept the score down to
nine points and shut out their op
ponents' score. The lineup:

against the automatic organ, the boy
pianist, and the squeaky violin. He

wuteh an exciting production, accom
panied by the most impossible kind of
music, is as ridiculous as for an opera
audience to hear a prima donna sing
to the music of the overture. I ven
ture to say that 50 per cent of the suc
cess of n motion picture is dependent
upon the manner in which it is exhibi
ted. The mesent system is absolutely
chaotic. The effect produced in mo

though, at the opera, the tenor had
finished his grent aria and the prima
donna came on to sing her love motif,
but the orchestra kept right on with
the tenor's aria.
"It is asking too much of the pub
lic to analyze the reasons for the con
fusion which follows in their own
minds; all the public sees is the final
effect. In many motion picture the
atres, the orchestra, stnrting from
nowhere in particular as regards the
continuity of the performance, will
start playing, say the "Tales of Hoff
man," and then will play it throueh
to its finish whether the scenes of the
picture are comedy, tragedy, or pa
thos. "Motion pictures are more to be
likened to the opera in its most popu
lar form than to the legitimate drama.
On this account, music nlays a most
important part in the effectiveness of
the entertainment. If the choice were
to be given to the many millions of
people in Great Britain and the Uni
ted States who uttend motion pictures
daily, whether they wished their mo
tion pictures with bad music, or no
music at all, the vote for the latter
condition j'ould be unanimous, I firm
ly believe.
