Famous Ira Bidwell Coming with
; Barnstorming Squad.
Although there will be no ballgame
in La Grande tomorrow, on account
of the races, the coming week is to
have a special treat in store for fans.
Tuesday June 11 beginning at 2:30
o'clock; the La Grande club in the
Valley league, will do battle with) the
Kansas City Red Sox, under Manager
Ira Bidwell, this team being now on
a barnstorming tour playing general
ly with organized baseball clubs.
Through Montana and Utah the team
made a grand sweep, and will bring
to La Grande probably the classiest
bunch of ball players the city will see
in some time. .
The La Grande squad will be bol
stered by Eddie Ford in the outfield,
Carl Evans behind the bat, and some
Portland city league piayers. It will
without question be the classiest per
formance of the year. The admission
is 50 cents. .
Visiting Manager Unique.
Manager , Ira Bidwell is a well
known character in western baseball.
A former player himself, he has been
prominent in organizing ball clubs,
leagues, independent and organized,
in Wyoming, Oklahoma, Kansas, Mis
souri and Nebraska. Bidwell is known
to fans of those states just as a
major league town knows its favor
ites. For three years Bidwell managed
the Cheyenne Indians, a great ball
club which traveled all over the west
and won a majority gf the games each
year. Traveling teams are a hobby
with. Jra and he ir.as Had one or two
out every season for the past six
years. ;
Ira is a well known organizer. Ho
has done much to put baseball on the
: map in many towns of the corn-belt
states. Ho has sent up many a play
er to the majors, among them being
Zabel and Hendrix, pitchers of the
Chicago cub team: Zack Wheat of the
Brooklyns; Mack W;hoat, his brother,
who caught for Buffalo in the M. E.
league and was with Brooklyn for a
spell, and offiiers. - Herb Mester, who
managed the Great Falls and Salt
Lake clubs in the Union association;
Gibson, who played the outfield for
Great Falls; Turgeon, who was with
the Butte club in 1913, and Trainor,
formerly with the Buffalo, Wyo.,
league club, are all prodigies of Ira
Bidwell, a go-getter in baseball.
The Enterprise team plays at Cove
tomorrow.

Dave Garrick is having plenty of
baseball experience in Enterprise this
week, his club there having been in
several games during the week. Con
cerning these contests the Chieftain
says in part:
"After 'being beaten in two close
and fairly good games during the
week the Enterprise baseball team
went to Josepfi for revenge yesterday,
and walloped the Elgin players 27 to
4. The two teams will meet later in
Elgin, and other games arc expected
on tho home grounds.
"Last Sunday Enterprise went to
Wallowa and lost 3 to 2 in a game
which all good fans called a thriller.

game to Elgin July 4th by tho score

'heads off, scrapping every inch of the
way and in spite of u very rough

.Their opponents played every bit as
good a game anil except for the er
ror column the averages of both
games, is about the same.
"Several nice fielding plays were
pulled by the outfield of both teams
though the visitor's infield played Uhm
best game. Of the pitchers Garrick
had u little bit the best of his op
ponent, Darling.
"Garrick struck out five men as did
also Darling. Enterprise made eight
hits against Elgin's four. Enterprise
has nine bad errors to its credit
against Elgin's one. Neitihi'r pitcher
walked a man though Garrick struck
an Elgin player with a pitched ball
while Darling let one man go to first
on a balk."
