Finds, He Says, Good Outlook.
"As the day of the Oregon primar
ies draw near, Theodore- Burton's
chances of winning the Oregon dele
gation to him are vastly improved and
mora certain" declured C. J. Owon, of
Portland, who was in tho city this
morning looking after tho Burton in
terests in this section of the Btate.
"We Burton supporters know we
have a good man at tho head of the
movement and r.s the people are find
ing his merits out, they ure swinging
to him in large numbers.
"As I travel over the state I hear
Burton talked in a way that is pleas
ing," continued Mr. Owen. "There
seems no doubt now as to how the
vote will stand on tho morning of
May 20th.
"The Oregonian recently pointed
out the whole truth in a nutshell when
it touched upon his qualifications. I
quote from it:
A President of the United States
has said publi'ly that Theodore Eli
jah "Burton is 'a statesman and a
scholar and that he is well qualified to
fill the highest office in the gift of tho
people.' Undoubtedly it is a de-

has given the greater part of his life
to the service of tho people, and who
has made in Congress an indelible
record of fidelity, efficiency, industry
and independence.

formed 'by Mr. Button as member and !
chairman of tho rivers and harbors ,
committee of the House, and later as
a Senator, in his unceasing warfare
on the pork barrel, is -well remem
bered. It entitles him to the grateful
appreciation of everyone who believes
that appropriations should be made
on their merits and not upon the size
and strength of Congressional pull.
It ought- to toe mentioned also that -Senator
Burton is and has been a
friend of the Columbia River, and tins
favored reasonable ard oven generous
appropriations for its improvement.
But he has been invincibly opposed to
the system which! saddled down use
ful projects, with wasteful and crim
inal expenditures for other schemes"
not worthy of any kind of considera
tion on their merits. .
