AT THE MOVIES
AT ARCADE.
John Harrymore "Killing!"
You are caught in a blind ulley,
with your back to a massive door.
Upon you rushes a squad of soldiers
shouting in a foreign tongue of whicn
you do not understand a word. But
one thing you do know that if they
can reach you they will kill you like
a rat. What will you do?. Jack Bar
rymore decided to fight, and he put
up one of the greatest battles ever
seen on the motion picture screen.
It all happens in "Nearly a King,"
in which the Famous Players Film
companv is starring the celebrated
comedian on the Paramount program.
It is the attraction at the Arcade for
Monday and Tuesday.
But the fight, which is one of the
most realistic and thrilling that has
ever been seen on the screen, is only
an incident in this whirlwind of fun
and romance in which Jack 'Barry-
more is at his very best. The trouble
all origiates from his resemblance to
the gay young Prince of Bulwana,
wjio nas decided to marry an actreBS
rather than espouse the Princess Hel
ene of Okam, whom he has never seen.
It is a super-Barrymore role, which
the great comedian plays in "Nearly
a King," for it combines thrills and
romance with the ridiculous situations
in the depicting of which John Barry
more has no equal. It is Barrymore
plus if the term may be applied to
so versatile an actor.
AT SHERRY'S
When Pugilism Is Picturized.
Most people, despite the atmosphere
! of war, are willing to be "too proud to
I fight," especially when it comes to
a nian-to-man struggle with the fists.
Just now, of course, there is a super
abundance of oratorical fights, letters
to the editor from our old friends,
"Vox Populi" and "ProBono Publico"
(omniscient wielders of the quarrel
some quill!), and the usual "within the
law" gymnastics of the .boxing ex
perts. (But getting down to ireul fist
fighting is usually left, by most of us,
to the libatious "huskeys" and actors
in moving pictures.
We get nearest to fighting in the
pages of the papers; we sometimes
listen to the man who has paid good
coin for long trips to the ring-side,
ale to fire old Lowre's interior for
combat, the whole floor-space of an
English "public house" is worked
over time and again in the cyclonic
rushes of the combatants. In and out
among chairs and tables; up and down
a short flight of stairs, now sluggin"
now wrestling, these two giant actors
impersonate the Tugged ferocity of
vengeful and besotted beast, battling
with clear headed science and just
that shade of advantage that 'the
sober man possesses.
"Secret Love" is a great film be
cause it is many-sided in its character
phrasing. The fight is only one ele
ment; the. e is the charm of sympathy,
the delight of two love stories and the
pathos of natural frailties which takes
one poor girl to suicide that she may
right her conscience, insofar as Vm'r
earthly act may do. Then there is
