Mays Role of Indian Prince in Photo
play, "The Ruling I'assion."
. William E. Shay, who plnys Ran
jit Singhi, an Indian prince, 'in tihe
William Fox production, "The Ruling
Passion," made a study of the secrets
of the Hindu mystic before beginning
work in the photoplay. Ranjit Singhi
is supposed to exert a hypnotic in
fluence over women. This picture is
at Sherry's.
"The part of Ranjit Singhi," says
Mr. Shay, "is decidedly at variance
with anything else I had ever done.
When I was cast for the part I im
mediately discerned that I was to
have mj hands full if I gave it a
proper interpretation. Ranjit Singhi
is enveloped in an atmosphere of
mystery, but flowing robes alone will
not give an actor the slightest semb
lance of an llndian mystic.
"I decided that I could do justice to
the role only by acquiring at least
some knowledge of the innermost
thoughts of tie real mystic. , I felt it
necessary to absorb in some degree
his mental attitude toward the un
initiated. To this end I sought out a
Hindu fakir in New York and studied
with him. I did not ask him how to
do this or how to do that. That
would have availed nothing. The
knowledge that I wanted was some
thing to be absorbed not learned by
word of mouth.
"I spent two months with the old
Hindu. . At the end of that time I
had accomplished my purpose. I had
dabbled in India's religions, her so
cial life, her customs. Above all, I
had learned no little about her seers
and far-famed practitioners of legerdemain."

"Quite frequently, little pet." uns

"Well, well, well! And do they ex

"Absolutely." i
