the traffic operations of the United
States would be -a national calamity;
and if arising through arbitrary action
of either side, without the questions in
dispute being submitted to a careful
and impartial analysis, would consti
tute an act inimical to public welfare
and fraught with grave consequences;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED,
That it is the sense of the Chamber
of Commerce of the United States of
America that the parties to tho con
troversy should, and in the interest of
the public weal must, settle their dif
ferences without recourse to measures
that would impair the public serviee;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,
That the Board of Directors of the
Chamber of Commerce of the United
States appoint a committee which shall
carefully and imparially investigate
and consider such phases of the situa
tion as relate to the interests of com
merce and the public, and shall from
time to time report to the board of di
rectors -as to the best means of pre
serving the public service unimpaired.
Portland Chamber Acts
A few days ago .the Portland Cham
ber of Commerce adopted the follow
ing resolution in this regard:
WHEREAS, the public of the Pa
cific Northwest will suffer great in
convenience and disastrous effects will
fall upon the lumber, grain and other
industries in the event of interruption
of public service by a general strike
as is threatened by railway trainmen's
organizations, and
WHEREAS, the Chamber of Com
merce of the United States has taken
action looking to an adjustment by ar
bitration of the issues in controversy
as per resolutions appended hereto.
THEREFORE. BE IT RESOLVED,
by the Portland Chamber of Commerce
that, in the interest of public con
venience and the welfare ofjhe Pacific
Northwest industries, we urge that
