La Grando, Oregon, under the pro
visions of Ordinance No. 833, Series
1916. "An Ordinance approving and
confirming the Re-Assessment made
and filed by the Recorder of the City
of La Grande, Oregon upon the 4th
day of February, 1916, for the im
provement theretofore "made of North
Second street from the North curb
line of W. avenue (formerly Harding

FVe blight inspection work will be-1
gin in the La Grunde district in the
near future. Now is the time to get
results in combating , this disease.
Cankers, as yet, are not oozing and
by removing them before the blos
soms open, the danger of a serious
outbseak of this pest is greatly re
duced. Oozing cankers ordinarly
form where a spur or twig has died
back to a limb on the mam body oi a
tree. However, cankers may form
any wfbere on a limb or on any part
or the tree. LanKers ordinarily ap
pear as sunken places in the bark and
usually, crack away from the ihealtihy
tissue. Depressed areus in the bark
in which tbe inner bark is alive at
this time of .the year, would not or
dinarily be considered a blight canker.
These cankers, when growth starts in
the spring, often ooze a sticky fluid.
This fluid seems to be attractive to
bees arid other insects. After feeding
on this substance if they fly to an ap
ple or pear blossom they will infect
the blossoms and cause what is Known
as spur blight. ' If they in any. way
injure a leaf or the tip or a growing
shute after ha vine visited an oozing
canker, these likewise become infect
ed. If cankers are oozing and heavy
rains occur, the water washing the
ooze down the body of the tree will
nfect anv broken tissue. It is quite
possible that blighting of the roots of
trees may be brought about by this
same process.
After considering these tacts it is
quite evident that now is the proper
time to remove the source of infec
tion. In cutting out cankers, cut

work will put forth every effort to
assist the tree owners in eradicatint;
this disease. These men are here to
assist you and instruct you in the
proper methods of handling this sub-
