Portland will celebrate its Tenth
Annual Rose Festival June 7, 8 and
9 when the city will pay homage to
Queen Rose. As an added feature
will be ithe national dedication of the
Columbia ' River Highway the road
that makes the gorge of the Colum
i bia Rivor near Portland passable for
i the first time for automobiles and
vehicles of every description.
The scenic beauties along the first
fouiy miles of the highway nre so
wonderful that the suggestion to dedi
cate the Highway was considered both
timely and a fitting event to observe.
Rose Festival days. The ceremonies
will be carried out opening day of the
fiesta. . - .
The eyes of the world will be cent
ered on Portland in June for the ded

Portland has long been famous as
the "Rose City" and has established
this claim aa a result of the enorm
ous annual production of rose flow
ers. Each' year Portland produce
more than 25,000,000 roses, in addi
tion to billions of buds. The Floral
Pageant, a festival feature, alone re
quires 4,000,000 iroses. Peninsula
Pork displays a rose garden where 1,
000,000 roses covering 700 varieties
are in bloom at one time Festival
week.
More than $2,000,000 has been in
vested in the first forty miles of high
way construction, but it has ODened ud
for the tourist some of tfhe most pic
turesque scenery in the world. The
Highway winds through the gorge on
an easy grade, in many places hang--ing
to cliffs. At Crown Point a turn
is made 700 feet above the river and
then the highway drops 600 feet in
wo miles on a grade of five per cent.
Portland is ready to welcome the
crowds to the dedication of its great
highway and the annual Rose .Fete.
The phrase that serves as the invi
tation this year is "For You A Rose
In Portland Grows." This invitation
is world-wide in its scope.

Average Man Cannot Meet Hardships
Says Harvard Gymnastic Director
Cambridge, Mass., March 19.
Lack of proper physical training has
made the ordinary American unfit for
military duty, declares Prof. Dudley
A. Sargent, director of the Hemenwsy
Gymnasium of Harvard, in. a state
ment made public today. Dr. Sar
gent in part says:
. "Our forefathers ' were pioneers,
men of. hardihood, courage and in
domitable will, used to a wholesome
mingling of mental, moral and phy
sical hardships and trials. Since then

weaker stock has followed in the trails
blazed by the strong. 4

the spirit of co-operation are not too
plentiful.,. No people living under the
trying conditions of our complex mod
ern life can, in any considerable pro
portion, withstand the hardships of
modern warfare, to say nothing of
rendering service, unless dt pays con
siderable attention to counteracting
the devitalizing and overspecializing
tendencies of modern, working and
living conditions.
"Our moral courage lacks the stim
ulus derived from the practice of
manly sports the only real and su
perior substitute for the stimulus of

"Physically, the public schools have

look for the material for the greater
number of our officers, are so con
tracted in their views of education as
to ignore the necessity for adequate
compulsory .physical education of the
bulk of the student body, while en
couraging overdevelopment and de

London, March 19. "The Prince of
IWalea has arrived in Egypt on ap
pointment as Staff Captain .to the gen
eral officer commanding in chief the
Mediterranean ; expeditionary, force,"
says an official statement issued to
night. The present Commander In Chief of
the Mediterranean army is Lieut. Gen.
Sir Archibald Murray, vfiio was suc
ceeded by Sir WHlliam Robertson as
Chief of the Imperial General Staff.
His headquarters are. in Cairo.
