describe the case of .Private U. A.
Dawson,' 10th Yorkshire Regiment,
probably the most shot up live man, of
the war.
The Germans wasted enough shrap
nel on Dawson's head to l:ill a dozen
mem. A few days after Dawson was
hit by a shell in Northern France,
surgeons probed from the wound in hi.

piece of steel, many fragments of wooa
and part of his cap.
H ot twenty days Dawson remained
unconscious, his face swollen and black
Surgeons and nurses shook their heads
over him often but Dawson refused to
die. Finally, having persisted in -. his
hold on life until December 3, he was
removed to a hospital in Boulogne
where French doctors amilied the X
ray. What they saw prompted them to
operate New Years day. They extract-
nearly 3 ounces. This missle had en
tered Dawson's face just above the
nose and penetrated downward to his
cheek. It was taken out vii the same
route by which it entereu und the op
eration was completely successful.
A few days later Dawson was taken
to London. Here in the Aing George
Military Hospital he suffered another
operation. This time it was on his loft
eye. The force of the blow firom the
shrapnel had warped the eye into a
useless nosition. The surgeon care
fully extracted the eye and put it back
with the focus at the proper angle.
"He s all fixed up now," the sur
geons announced today. "Hell soon be
going back to the trenches." It pro
bably will be months before Dawson
will be able to rejoin the army but it
is his one desire to cet revenee.
He hails from tne little town oi
Bishop Auckland, Durham, where he
joined the ermy during the first ten
days of the war. It was five months
in the trenches for Dawson before ho
was hit. -

car shortage in this vicinity is get

Southern Pacific tie treating plant

H. Chambers mill has orders for over
76 carloads and if they do not get
