Interesting Theme Chosen.
Tomorrow morning Rev. Ford of the
Christian church will discuss the
.much-mooted topic of what happens
when death comes. He has given the
subject much study and promises a
, concise line of argument in expound
ing the question.
Union Meeting in Chapel.
The ministers of the city have de
cided to hold a union meeting in the
Lane Memorial Chapel, corner First
and Crook, beginning March 5th. Since
the chapel serves the community and
in ifunction is wholly undenomina
tional, the ministers will take turns in
preaching from night to night. The
meetings have been arranged for at
least two weeks.

Pendleton, -Feb. 26. To bring the
annunl W. C. T. U. state convention to
Pendleton this fall is the purpose of a
movement now on here in which the
W. C. T. U. organization and the
Pendleton Commercial Club are co-vv-
. operating. If successful, it will mean
on Important convention for the 'city
in October. Iast year the conven,
. tion met at New-berg and 130 ffelo
gatcs attended. Should the conven
tion come here it is . estimated
the attendance will be equally large
or better.
The selection of a meeting place
for the state convention rests with
the executive committee whioh is to
meet in Portland March 6. At that
time Mrs. -J. C. Woodworth, county
president for Umatilla county, will
present an invitation to Pendleton in
behalf of the Pendleton W. C. T. U.

held in Pendleton and seldom if ever

Cascade mountains. Accordingly the
claim for recognition this year will
be baaed largely on the argument that
eastern Oregon is entitled to the meet
ing. The state convention usunlly lasts
for a period of three days and tho at
tendance is drawn from the various
community leaders in the association's
work throughout the state.

War Orphans Get Care.
Wokingham, England, Feb. 26.
This little English market town is the
nation's haven for motherless and
fatherless war children. Hundreds of
juvenile innocents whose fathers lie
buried in France have found homes
here. Almost every housewife in Wo
kingham has a new baby. She probably
has adopted it, thanks to the war.
The nuns at Wokingham convent are
busy too, for every child who is old
enough is a pupil at the convent school.
In some cases the father is dead but
the mother still lives.
Little Tommy Hadley, age six, is a
notable example. His father was a
private in the South Lancashire regi
ment and he was killed early in the
war. Since that time Tommy's mother
has been ill so the Children's aid So
ciety sent Tommy to Wokingham. Ho
has a foster mother who clothes him
and gets him ready for school every
morning. One of the older girl orphans
calls for Tommy and other boy and
girl orphans. By the time she arrives
at the convent she has a happy string
of changes ready for the day's lessons.
Many of Wokingham s orphans
whose fathers and mothers are gone
are permanently installed in Wokmg-
nam homes, ihey have changed their
names and will grow up with "regular"
fathers and mothers. Some of the
children are only motherless. The fath
er is still fighting somewhere in the
war. If he; comes back, which perhaps
he will not, the child may leave Wo
kingham. But in the other event there
will be a new adoption in some Wo
kingham home.
