This Department is in receipt 'of
inquiries from many citizens through
out the State requesting information
concerning certain insurance com
panies soliciting, through the mails,
Life accident and Health Insurance,
and I want to warn the public be
fore acepting this cheap kind of in
surance that the Insurance Commiss
ioner has no authority M;o regulate
companies or agents other than those
which have complied with our laws
and are licensed to transact in
surnnce business, in this state.
Beware of a Company which sells
insurance at less than cost for a
Company which does not make a pro
fit is not a safe one in which to in
sure, I want to strongly advise against
listening to socalled adjusters of life
insurance policies. A person repre
senting himself as a Life Adjuster
does this to create an impression that
your policy is not properly written
and then endeavors to place one he is
selling. Such a person is in.' the
same class as a horse thief, and I
strongly urge our citizens in pur
chasing insurance to deal only with
licensed, authorized- agents. If the
agent should be a stranger, make him
produce his license for 1916 and when
ever you are in doubt write this office
as this Department was created for
the protection of our citizens, and it
will endeavor to advise as to the re
sponsibility of the different agents.

Steel Works Consolidate.
Portland, Ore. Feb. (By Mail)
Portland business men were elated by
the announcement Friday that the
Willamette Iron & Steel Works and
tihe Northwest Steel Company have
formed a combination for the purpose
of . constructing two huge (tramp
steamers here.
Today businessmen predicted the
early dawn of boom time prosperity.
The announcement that Portland cor
porations are to engage actively in
. the building of steel ships came on
the heels of tihe determination of the
Pacific Coast Steel Company to estab
lish a plant here for the manufacture
of structural steel. The three plants,
when completed, will give employment
to 2000 men, 90 percent of whom will
he skilled laborers.
The plant of tihe (Williamette Iron
& Steel works is located at the foot of
Seventeenth street. It won its re
putation among shipbuilders by com
pleting the repair work on the' Grace
lino steamer Santa Clara, in record
time. The Northwest Steol Company
is miking its first entrance into the
Shipbuilding business, Heretofore
it (has engaged principally in the man
ufacture of structural steel. The
plant at present employs 200 men.
Never before has Portland reached
out for big shipbuilding contracts.
Facilities were lacking, and no com
panies capable of handling the work
were willing to venture.
It is expected thut ways will be con
structed on the South Portland flats
and necessary equipments installed
within 90 days to begin construction
on the first of the two 8800 ton steel
steamers. Beyond the atalbement
that they are for, foreign interacts."
no intimation has been given as to the
identity of the purchasers.
Each vessel will cost more than
$1,000,000. t
It is practically certain that the
shipbuilding combination between the
two companies will be (permanent.
The building of the hulls will 'be done
by the Northwest Stool Company, and
engines will be manufactured by the
WiUinmette Iron & Stedl Works.
Woodwork will be sublet to Portland
firms.
