DEDICATORY CEREMONIAL WAS
A BUSY DAY.

Sunday was a red letter day for the
Catholics of Eastern Oregpn. All
roids led to Xja. Grande, arid many
Catholics assembled to attend the
dedication exercises of the new church
of Our Lady Of the Valley. The
Right Reverend Bishop O'Reilly, as
sisted by a score of priests, com
menced the dedication exercises at
nine o'clock. These services were i
private, and at ten o'clock the doors :
were thrown open for ' the solemn I
pontifical mass. A large lumber of j
Knights of Columbus from all parts
of the state, marched in procession'
and occupied seats of honor. On this j
occasion the Bishop wore the. , vest
ments donated to him by the peopie j
of the diocese on the occasion of his
recent silver jubilee. The officers of

music was of high order of excellence.
Immediately after the . gospel,
Father Driscoll made the announce
ments, and expressed his thanks to
those present for the assistance and
encouragement rendered by them. -The
Rieht Reverend Bishop O'Reilly
then delivered a forceful and stiring
sermon, taking for his text the ln
troit of the mass of dedication. In
stirring words he explained to those
present the meaning of the word
"church," the holiness attached to the
term, the respect that Christians
should have for the house of God, and
the necessity of coming there to wor
ship him.
The Church of Our Lady of the Val
ley is one of the architectural gem 3
of Eastern Oregon. Built in the mod
ified Norman-Gothic style, of terra
cotta and pressed brick, it is regard
ed as the pride of the city of La
Grande by Catholics and non-Catholics
alike. The interior decorations
are in keeping with the Gothic style
of architecture. The altars, chancel
railing, pews, stations and windows
being harmonius in design. The
stained glass windows attracted at
tention of all present. These windows
represent scriptural subjects in beau
tiful colorings. They are the gifts o:
various members of the parish.
Degrees Exemplified.
In the afternoon the visiting
Knights of Columbus united with the
La Grande council in the exemplifica
tion of the three degrees of Colsm
bianism. The Baker council exempli
fied (he first degree, La Grande coun
cil the second degree, and the Pendle
ton council, under the direction of
District Deputy J. II. Pcare, exempli
fied the third degree to a class of fifty
two candidates.
In the evening a sumptuous ban
quet was served to two hundred
Knights and visiting priests. The
guest of honor was the Right Rever
end Bishop. When he entered the
hall, the Knights rose in a body and
gave him a frousing welcome. At the
main table the bishop and clergymen
were seated, together with the City
