THRIFT DAY.
There is at the present time being
conducted In this country a campaign
which is worthy of the deepest con
sideration by every man, woman and
child, because upon its successful on-
eration will depend our increased na
tional, community and individual Dro
gress. It is the movement which has
been designed to bring into greater
evidence and practice everywhere the
inestimable quality of thrift a qual
ity which has more to do with ulti
mate success than any other one fac
tor.
Educators, economists, and, in fact,
all constructive thinkers have long
recognized the erowinor necessity for
the practice of greater thrift on the
part of American citizens if our na
tional welfare is to be permanent and
substantial. One only has to glance
at history to realize that extrava
gance, in its disastrous effects unon
national welfare, may be likened to
the rapidly spreading parasite vine
which, wrapping itself around the
mighty oak, draws upon the very life
and sustenance until the grand old

tree decays, crumbles away and finally
topples over. ,
Without thrift, failure, dissatisfac
tion and discovient are inevitable,
whether in the life of the nation, cor
poration, home or individual, and in
dividual thrift is the foundaton upon
which is established community and
national thrift.
TTnfore th indivdual can be ex.
pected to practice thrift, however, he
must understand in what it really con
sists. Perhaps the foremost reason
that the word thrift is a distasteful
one to the ears of many of our citi
zens is that for years in thia country
there has been a general misconcep
tion of the term..
Thrift is not, as many suppose, nig
gardliness or stint in the necessities
and sane, enjoyments of life ;in real
ity, it makes available more monev
for the things which make life really
worth while through the elimination
of unnecessary and useless expenditure.
It is something more than saving.
it means "earning, working planning
and increasing, "as well as conserv
ing." ft is common sense In actual
operation in every iphase of human
endeavor and activity,
Rightly understood, the practice of
inrixt oecomes a positive pleasure,
for it is a wise adaptation of means
toward a beneficent end the constant
maintenace of a fair standard of com
fort and an increase of life's entnv-
j j
ments and a lessened share of its
burdens with the flight of years.
The earning power of the neonl
of the United States is very great,
out their saving propensity is less
fully developed than could be wished.
though we are far from being a na
tion of spendthrifts. No doubt, by a j
proper utilization of the ODnortnni-
ties of Thrift day, much valuable ed
ucational work could be done, and the
suggestion to set aside one day of
tne year ror the purpose of showing
our people how their welfare would be
advanced by the practice of greater
thrift and economy is one that should
receive the active co-operation of all.

It is almost impolite for the gov
ernors of Arizona and California ti
talk about annexing part of Mexico,
at this time. But that is what they
are doing. Governor Hunt of Ariz
ona has written Governor Johnson cf
California on the subject of buying
that part of the Mexican frontier
around the head of the Gulf of Cali
fornia. Tho idea was launched hv ir
rigation interests of the Imperial val
ley, and Arizona mining men. 1
Tho Colorado River, be it known,
has a bad habit of bursting its banks
and inundating the Surrounding land
scape which in many places is lower
than the river even lower than the
sea. It did this down in southern
California and left a rich and fertila
valley, which is irrigated from the
still rampageous Colorado.
The point where the
ditches leave the river, and the point
wnere tne river must be held in leash
to prevent a recurrence of the flnnH.
is in Mexico. The farms ara in f!nl
ifornin. Governor Hunt of ArW.rma
and Governor Johnson of California
want to buy up that part of Mexico
containing the key to Imperial Val
ley's prosperity. It remnims tn v

would be worth while if it brought

Latin America. No doubt the Imper

this territory under .tha star

versus i-an-American, we are for Pan-
America.
