This afternoon saw the final re
hearsal of the Elks' show, "Don't Lie
to Your Wife," for tomorrow night,
and everything is going as smooth
as a professional company could make
it. Mr. Harding as Capt. Racket will
sure m'ake you listen. A. B. Rogers
as Uncle Obadinh will do all risrht.
Mr. DeVero as Timothy is henpecked
beyond description and plays the part
in his usual capable manner.. II. E.
Dixon as Mr. Dalroy, an eccentric old
gentlemen gets by in great style. Bill
Peare as Hobson is a very English

Clarice is "charming, dainty, delight
ful and then some. Mrs. DeVore
as Mrs. Tolman, the lady with a
temper, is a real scream. Mrs. Thos.
(Williamson as Katy, the mischievous
maid is some soubrette.
Mr. Peare in his specially does
splendidly and the young ladies assist
ing him, Misses Nowlin, ArbucWe,
Peare and Bramwell, bring it upi to a
standard seldom attained by amateurs.
Mr. Coleman in his Scotch specialty
is in a class by himself and has an act
seldom seen in towns of this size as
he is direct from the Orpheum circuit
and it is simply matter of luck that
he is hero at this time, .w
The Elks' quartet, . Messrs. Bjrnie,
Howlund, Bramwell and Ferrin, have
something entirely new. They are all
accomplished singers and will givu
you some harmony that will make you
remember, it for some time to come,
and to miss it is to miss something
worth more than the admission.
Arrangements have been made for
some scenic effects for the specialties
that ure entirely new and novel. In
fact everything has been done possible
to make a real show.
Specialties will be introduced in the
acts as well as between and there will
be something doing all the time.
Everybody seems to be going as the I

Cove, Jan. 24. (Special Harry
Becker and wife and Mrs. A. L. Beck
er were called La Grande Thursday
to the bedside of their father, George
Becker, who passed away Friday.
Mr. Becker was a well known and
prominent farmer of this section who
retired from active farm life two
years ago. He leaves a wife, three
sons and two daughters, also a host
of friends who extend their heartfelt
sympathy to the bereaved ones. .
A. P. Conley returned from Port
land where he took his brother George
for medical attention. Ho reports him
getting along nicely and that he will
soon be home again.
Mr. Shanks has moved his confec
tionery store from Cove to North
Powder.
John Merony of La Grande is visit
ing relatives here this week.
Mrs. George Conley left last Wed
nesday for Portland to be with her
husband, George Conley, who recently
was moved from the La Grande hos
pital to Portland where he underwent
an operation and is on tho road to re
covery. Mrs. M. Borkgren was a guest at
the Geo. Chadwick home the fore part
of the week.
R. I. Barker is enjoying a visit from

the Roesch pond. The work occupied
about a week during which time a
force of twenty was employed. TJie

Deals pending for . several days
looking toward the sale of Fred Gei-
bel's department store, have been
consummated, and the institution is
now the property of W. S. Parker, of
Newberg, and Virgil Bolton of . this
city. - :
Several' days ago Mr. Parker, who
has resigned a responsible position on
the road with a drygoods house, came
here -from Newberg to look the propo
sition over with a view of purchasing
it. The sale has now been made and
Mr. Geibel severs connection with the
store. Although Mr. Parker will not
he here regularly for about a month,
he contemplates making La Grande
his home and will bring his family
here as soon s convenient to do. so.
He will have direct charge of the dry
goods and Mr. Bolton, who learned the
business in West's men's department,

side In the meantime A. T. Hill will
umphantly at Baroudi's she is stunned
by her lover's statement that she is
too dangerous a toy for him. His door
closed upon her, she totters faltering
ly back to the house which she had
so dramatically spurned. But she is

who shuts the door in her face before
she has an opportunity to reach her
impressionable and soft-hearted hus
band. With the only two havens of
refuge closed, Bella Donna, her wild
dream of wealth, power and luxury
shattered forever, gazes wistfully out
upon the desert waste in the black
night. Then she slowly traces her
weary and faltering way out across
the desert and into oblivion.
