Slight Advance Made Monday in Pork
. but Otherwise Little Change.
Portland, Jan. .19. Yesterday's
livestock market was a dull hffair.
There was nothing doing until shortly
before noon, and then only two sales
of hogs were made. These were lack
ing in quality, and did not command
top prices. The market was reported
as steady throughout.
Late Monday afternon hogs scored
a further advance of 5 cents, making
the jump for the day 35 cents ana
placing the top at $7.25.- The market
was the third highest in the United
States. St. Louis led, with Chicago
second and Portland third. Kansas
City and Omaha were tied for fourth,
and Denver was at the bottom of the
list with 7 cents as top. Seattle,
which has been proclaiming a higher
market daily than Portland, failed to
get in the swim on its direct bought
stuff yesterday, and with a top of
$7.25 here their quotation was $7.15.

Are Boy Babies Increasing?
London, Jan. 12. (By Mail) Is war

This question is engaging the atten
tion of British medical authorities
following the regiBtar-General's re
port that all records for boy balnea
born in 36 large towns in Englasd
and Wales have been broken during
the lost nine months.
A against 1000 female .births,
1,032 boys were born in January and
March;-1,043 in April and June and
1,065 in July and August and Septem
ber. Advance records indicate that
the ratio will be even greater from
October to January, 1916. A theory
that some natural law, yet undis
covered, lends to the birth of more
boys than girls during a nation's war
stress is partially borne out by re
ports from Austria, where male births
have exceeded female births during
the war, to an even greater extent
than in England.
Professor W. D. Halliburton, Dean
of Medicine at King's college, London,
discussing the subject, declared to
day that there is no scientific theory
to justify the belief.
"The fact is there," he stated. "We
must look upon it ns a wise uispen
srition of Providence. One popular
explanation is that the r.nxiety or
privation of the mother during the
pre-nat period has some influence
on determining the sex of her child.
But no scientific explanation war
rants such an idea." Prfessor Arthur
Dendy of the Zoological arid Animal
Biologic-ul faculty, King's College
declared that prevailing birth con
ditions could not be attributed to mere
coincidence. He was unable to ex
plain further. .
Offioiul reports made public by the
Registrar-General also said that the
marriage rate for England and Wales
during the lost three months was the
highest in history 21.8 persons per
1,000.
