convention. The wage scale commit
tee is meeting. All wage scale con
tracts for both anthracite and bitu
minous fields soon will expire. Presi
dent John P. White for the first time
refused to give out his biennial re
port, in advance, saying it was of
such importance he wotiUV't take
chances. His report is to be pre
sented today or tomorrow.
The miners expect to demand an
increase in wages of 10 o 20 per cent
in every organized field. There have
been rumors that general coal strikes
are coming. Railroads are reported to
have been hoarding coal in prepara
tion for such strikes. ' Officials of
the mine workers today said that they
could forsee no definite trouble if. the
operators proved reasonable.
The nature of the 'organization's
internal trouble is a secret, but is i
believed to be associated with Presi- j
dent White himself. Better working ,
conditions will be demanded by the j
miners, including a request for the i
general acceptance of the mine run I
system, in effect in Illinois and Ohio. I
International officials have been try- i
ing to arrange with the operators for
the re-establishement of the inter
state joint conference and operators
of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and western ;
Pennsylvania, an agreement whereof '
will be a basis of negotiations in
other states. The interstate con
ference was discontinued after Ohio
operators refused to accept the' mine
run proposition, which later was pro
vided for in that state by law. This is
one of the largest labor conventions
in America.

These three bird men, Thaw and
Cowdln from New York and Prince
from Boston, have each won the crotx
de guerre. AH three have been re
ported dead on mofe than one occasion.
They emphatically denied ttio rumors.'
Prince was the most often killed of
the three. He explained that the false
reports were due to the fact that
James Bock, another American flier,
fell behind the German lines and was
mistaken for bun. What became of
Bock the others never know.
Thaw said there are as many men
iu the French flying corps, counting
mechanics nnd helpers, as there are in
tho whole of the United States army.
Yet 47 per cent of tho French fliers
have been killed, wounded or captured.
There are 1,200 pilots at the front and
800 more either schooling or in reserve.
He said there was not an American
built aeroplane at the Fronch. front
Asked where all the American ma
chines havo gone, he supposed they
were In Englund and Russia.
None of the three ever saw a Zep
pelin. Thaw said he was not sure
whether the Zeppelins do not raid Par
ts . because of the efficiency of the
Freuch flying corps and the French
antl-atr craft guns or because the Ger
mans hate the English more than they
do the French and head for London.
All three of tho American fliers prais
ed the worth of the German antl-atr
craft guns, and with good reason,; as
all bad shots tear through the wings
of their craft in flight several times. '
"If the Germans can see youthey
can hit you," Thaw said. "The only
way to keep out of their range is by
flying high."
They agreed on the best working al
titude to fly as about 12,000 feet At
that height they were able to both raid
and observe. Much of their recent fly
ing was done at night
They said the three principal duties
they had to perform were reconnoltdr
ing, raiding and directing the French
artillery fire, ranking in Importance In
the order named. The average length
of their flights were from one to Ave
hours.
