of her father at Minam, returned to
school Monday.
iGladys Currey who was operated
upon 'for appendicitis some time ago,
visited the school Monday. She ex
pects to re-enter school at the begin
ning of the second semester.

The semester examinations will
commence January 8th and continue
throughout the week. The second
semester will begin the following
week.
The second semester freshmen will
enter tho 17th. They are about twen
ty in number and their classes will

clone Davis," the new Texas Repre
sentative, for one long, dreary nour,

eluded that the "Texas Cyclone" mere
ly is a zephyr. His constituents may
iook upon mm as a wit aim "re
eater, but he gave the House little
evidence of this.
To cinch his hold on. the distinction
of beincr the freak member,- "Cy
clone" Davis dresses the part. Tall
and gaunt, he makes himself the more
conspicuous by spurning the Bhirt and
collar of ordinary dress. Instead, be
neath his long, black coat, he wears a
somber gray sweater, which does ser
vice for shirt, collar and tie.
,The general verdict is that Cy
clone" Davis looks the part, but that
he is not able to tall- . up to his
reputation.

Program for Meeting at Chchalis Is
Arranged.

cial) The program for the meeting
of bookeepcrs of the 1'aeinc Nortn
west, which will be held in Chehalis
January 21 and 22, has been arranged
and some interesting papers and dis
cussions are promised. It is expected
that there will be a lai'ge attendance.
The program will open Friday af
ternoon with an address by A. E.
Richie, of Chehalis. Following ths
opening papers on various problems
faced by the beekeepers will be read
by experts from various parts or the
state.

SNOW IN UMATILLA
Heaviest Fall All Over County Known
in Many Years

the police force in 1836 to the effect
that this is the greatest snow in Uma
tilla countv since that time.
Theodore Howard says it Is the
greatest snow since a long time ago
but as he can remember bck farther
than Chief Gurdane could possibly be
expected to, he probably will be entitl
ed to the honors.
But anyway it is a great snow, the
greatest snow that many of .Pendle
ton's present day residents can re
meinlber, for like the jackal they did
not cross the olains in '52 and there
fore cannot say "Now, I emember
back in the winter of '78 there was

such a snow that Lot Livormore and
S. L. Morse had to turn carpenters in
the building of stdp ladders so that
people who were in their homas could
get out and those who were out late
that night could get into their homes.
It was such a snow that the old court
house was only a wreath of smoke and
Byers' mill only a mole hill on the
white surface."
Today the snow lies from 4 inches
to 8feot deep all over Umatilla coun
ty, with the exception of a few wind
blows and chinook belts. All along the
line of the O. W. R. & N. over the
mountains the big rotary shovels are
kept busy night and day bucking the
ever falling frozen rain and it is a
Herculean task to keep the road open.
Over the wheat field the snow lies
at a depth of from 6 inches to 2 feet,
the nearer the mountains and the foot
hills the deeper the blanket. Even in
Pendleton it is easily 4 inches deep on
the level while on the hills in view
from the city it is 6 inches to a foot.
The Change in weather conditions is
a great boon to the eick and a happi
ness to the overworked physicians of
the city. No sooner did the snow and
colder weather come than there was a
perceptible falling off in cases of the
grip, and an improvement in general
health conditions and a very mark
ed turn for the better. Every doctor
