''Still Waters," in which the Fam
ous layers Film Comany is starring
Marguerite Clark on the Paramount
Program at the Arcade Tuesday-is a
story of canal-boat life and of:, the
circus. It develops assfollows:
When old man Martin's only daugh
ter eloped with a circus performer, it
was a bitter blow to him, and when
the deserted girl returned, a year lat
er, he refused to forgive her, but took,
her baby girl away from her before
he banished her from his sight. Terror-stricken
by the fear 'that little
Nesta would suffer the same fate that
had overtaken her mother, Martin had
decided to seek seclusion on a canal
boat, where he gave. Her everv educa
tional advantage possible under the
circumstances, though he ( zealously
guarded her f rom contact with , the
outside world.
,' A vivacious, extremely bright and
ambitious girl,: Nesta frets, at the re
trains and finally slips away to a
neighboring orchard, where she meets
young Dr, Ramsay, the owner of the
property. Ar.- flirtation results from
this chance meeting which soon ripens
into love. But Mrs. Ramsay has othor
ambitions for her son, and she invites
Lthe object of her motherly schemes t
visit tno house. . ,. .
A circus, the first that Nesta has
ever seen,' comes to the neighboring
town. The little girl is captivated by
the glamor of the -show - and runs
away from the canal boat in order to
see the performance. She attracts
theattention of the circus folk, and,
when the woman who is playing Pier
rette collapses Nesta takes her place.
A cleverly arranged fainting scene,
staged at the proper moment by the
"other girl," crushes Nesta under the
weight of the sudden . discovery of
what she erroneously believes ito be
the duplicity of the perfectly inno
cent Ramsay. Angered by her grand
father's stern1 discipline, the reason
for which is a sealed book to her, and
heartbroken by her lover's apparent
defection, Nesta runs away to join
the circus. . ,
But she soon finds that the , only
person she can trust in the troupe is
the sick woman whose place she took
as Pierrette. The ring-master marks
her for his own, and it is only by
flight (that she escapes his vicious de
signs. Fleeing down the towpath to
the canal-boat,: with 'ithe -ring-master
in pursuit, Nesta arrives in safety,
only to And the cabin empty.
' Old man Martin, .shocked at the
flight f his little granddaughter, has
become critically .ill and has, been re
moved to Dr. Ramsay's home. The
doctor, learning the reason for the old
man's condition, has gone in search of
Nesta. .i Having- missed her at the cir
cus, he returns from the canal boat in
tjme to rescue her from , the ring-,
maste'r,' wno has trapped. her in fche
deserted cabin. . " Si : .

ever been seen in La Grande is de

Not only is there in the cast of
"Avenging Conscience" every star ap
pearing in "The Birth of a Nation,'
but Miss Blanche Sweet will be seen

This remarkable photo-play is a
picturization : of Edgar Allen Poe's
books and poems,' particularly "The
lei 'taie .Heart" and -'Annabel lea.' r l

science" break attendance records at
the Heilig Theatre, Portland, where
it Tan a full week, hut at -the Mel
bourne Theatre, Seattle, where larger
crowds saw it than witnessed "The
Birth of a Nation." At the Strand
Theatre, New York, it ran for weeks,
at prices ranging from $2 down.
Baltimore paid $1.50 to see it, Chicago
and many other eastern cities the
same sum. ' .
. The state rights are owned by Oiv
ton E. Goodwin and Sol Baum, who :
are asserted to have paid a tremend- j
ous price for .the picture. ,..
The cast of stars includes: Henry B.
Walthall, Blanche Sweet, Mae Marsh,
Ralph Lewis, Robert Hanron, Jose
phine Crowell, George Siegman and
Spottiswoode Aitken.
