of the ..Federated .church of Enter

commented on the strength and weak

lines of activity to widen the church's
efficiency and usefulness to members
and to the community. J. A. .. Bur

: Rev. A. J, Adams and J. L. Wor

The chief weakness in the federa

"The church," ne said, "la not the

The Sunday School is too scattered,
different departments meeting in the
various V churches. - All should be
centered "so that all could work to

get the benefit of the enthusiasm that
comes with large and prosperous
organization. : i
"The strength of the, federation,"
he said, "lies in the fact we are unit

one step nearer to the Lord's prayer
that all be one. The federation is the
best thing found yet to advance that
ideal. Let oib develop it more muy.

From New York to Portland the
leading newspapers have gone into
ecstacies over "Avenging Conscience''
the D. W Griffith "supreme achieve

theatre Wednesday for two days only.
Its producer, Griffith,, says it in
greater than his "Birth of' a Nation."
It has all the stars in that picture,
with Blanche Sweet, in addition.
Critics say that Henry Walthall does
greater work than at any other time
in this picturization of Edgar Allen
Poe's "The Telltale Heart" and "An

' Here are some of the criticisms on
"Avenging Conscience:"

; Mr."- WoTrtil said he could not un
derstand why the attendance was no
greater at the services. ,But he felt
an effort should be made for greater
usefulness by the church by providing
entertainment for men and making of
the church the social center of the
town. He referred to Y. M. C. A. or
ganizations in other towns, saying

in a position to start a movement
along lines of the associations. He
would like to see a gymnasium opened,
with pool tables and other games and
amusements. ' , ' '
In his annual report, Mr. Adams
said he conducted 39 funerals and 53
weddings during .the year, certainly
a great .record for so small a town. :
C. H. Zurcher told something of the
churches in Enterprise 25 years ago.
He recalled attending the first church
service held here, in a log cabin by

a Methodist minister of Alder, named
Rev. Wood. In the early days, after
three churches had been established,
he said the attendance was fairly
good; there was no other place to go

Speaking on the "Old Year," G. W.
Hyatt emphasized the fact that the
influence of church had brought re
forms, citing the fact that the pro

day. Ho though people were drawn
away from the church by too many
outside amusements. '

Big Business at Mexican Ports.
St. Helens, Or., Jan. 5. The sailing
of the two McCormick steamers,
Wapana and Klamath, Monday night
for Mexico indicates a revival in
business in the territory at Mexican
coast ports.! The Wlapama carried
500,000 fewt of piling'and 600,000 feet
of lumber, while the Klamath's cargo
consisted of 500,000 feet of piling: and
600,000 feet of lumber. The wapama

ath to Guaymas. ..." r 'V i " . J 5
Owing to improved conditions - in
both places, both steamers will have
good passenger lists from San Fran
cisco and Los Angeles, as many min
ing men and those interested in Mex
ican industries now are returning
since Carranza has complete charge
of .the country , in which their several
enterprises are located. Just to the
south of Mazatlan is an island which
is being developed by Los Angeles
capitalists and Purser Howard, of the
Klamath,, stated that on his last trip
50 passengers were taken down to lo
cate on this island, where pineapples
and other fruits are raised easily and
marketed at a good profit.
Both steamers expect to be back
in. the Columbia river in about 2
days and will make several coastwise
trips 'before again going to Mexico.
The Southern Pacific railroad Mexi-
ican' system,.' running - north from
Guaymas, has now been pod in condir
tion and a regular schedule ia being
maintained, while that portion of the
line from Guaymas to Maratfcffl is be
ing repaired as rapidly bj uiyrfMrend
regular' service is expected fcortly.'
The cargoes on both Wapama and
Klamath will be used in railroad and
mine construction in Mexico;
