New York, Apr. 21. A legacy left
to Now York state g devotees of the
arena and padded mitt the state leg
islature, which was preparing today
to adjourn . sine die promises a new
deal in managing fistic affairs.- .
Among the more important . mea
sure acted upon by the expiring leg
islature wag the Malone hilt, reorgan
izing the : state boxing tommission,
providing i.for r the: appointment - of
of three new commissioners and oust
ing of the old Democratic commission.
The Malone bill gives the state tox on
boxing exhibitions from 5 to 7 1-2 per
cent of the gate reciepts. A secre
tary to the commission at $3,000 is
another choice plum for some Re:
publican fistic expert. "
Mike Donovan, veteran trainer and
up. to a few months ago boxing in
structor at ; the ; New York Athletic
Club, has been an active candidate for
appointment as one of the new com
missioners. Donovan's ( application
has the signature of endorsement of
of many financiers.' Ho was one star
middleweight boxer and is a civil war
veteran. ' He Was. recently retired by
the N. Y; Athletic Clug. -
Those in the know here do not be
lieve that n attempt will be made by
fight promoters to boost admission
j prices because .of the proposed extra
(state tax. They are chiefly anxious
I regarding the attitude of the Com
. mission on regulations of boxing mat
ches and, particularly, the question
or granting permits to new culbs. .
I Some fight promoters declare that
: the fight . game is being over ' done
jhere that too many clubs are giving
! exhibitions with the result that-cv
'are making any money, except when
hoadliners are matched , .
