brief Inquiries at the desk had only
aerved to make the matter darker, ho

Painfully be aet the facts In order
' before blm. The first .was that Kutli
bad gone to New York to ilenl with
Ererett about money for Improvement
to tbe "Motor Key." The sucoud wns
tbat abe had evidently not becu able
to find Everett and hod started west
again, Tbe third was tbat she had
been In tbls very room. There lay the
papers tbat represented tbe mine and
' its value. But bow where bow could
It be?
His businesslike senses returned, and
be proceeded to wire Everett's office In
New York, wttb the result that he wns
: soon In possession of his address In
Ban Francisco.
' "8o Everett's here, too." he mutter
ed. "Tbat Is stranger yet. 1 guess It
was time I dropped In. Now to rind
Hotbl" 1
. ' He thrust tbe packet of papers In his
pocket and then withdrew them and
locked tbem again Into tbe dressci
drawer. He bad a dim notion that
Buth might come back for tbem. Then
be telephoned to the St Francis hotel
and left word for Everett, who was re
ported to be out l;
Still folic wins what his common
sense told blm was tbe logical method
of unraveling the tangle he went down
' to the desk and entered Into conversn
' tJon with the clerk. Meanwhile bis eye
ran down tbe register. Opposite tlio
number of the room be now occupied
be saw a heavily scrinvled "Mrs. J,
Darnell and daughter."
( He frowned, ami the clerk said syni
iwthvtlcnlly, "Ton must hnvo a nasty

. "I have," John returned. "Met with
an accident In nn nuto that rntber uji

stops here,"
I TO DOrr's secret amusement tho clerk
became mysterious, leaning across tho
desk to wlilspcrAb. you know bcr?"
"I wuntcd specially to seo her," John
equivocated "Is she hero?"
"Bhe Is not, and she loft In a very
strange way," tho clerk explained
quietly. "She came here last evening
with bcr daughter. I gnro them tho

"Was tbe girl very fnlr haired and
nud beautiful?" Dorr managed to ask
in an Indifferent- tcne. .
"Precisely," reniondcd the clerk, sud
denly matching uls guest's manner.
"If you want to find ' Mrs. Darnell
maybe the house detective got lier ad
dress or tbe address of tho hospital
they took the girl to." ' .
Presently. In renponse to a summuns,
appeared the detective, who scanned
John's somewhst bruised face thotight
fully, saying uothlng until the clerk
explained that Mr. Dorr wished, if nos
slbie, to get into coin m indention with
Mrs. Darnell.
The best I can do In to. Hud the tail
driver for you," he mid slowly, still
studylug John's stalwart figure. "Tie
may bo out on tbe stand now. Let's
we"
As they passcd out the detective con
tinned hesitatingly, "Do you know Mrs
Darnell very well?"
v There was tbat In tbe man's tone
that made John pause before answer
Ing. lie glanced at the cool,, impus
slve face and caught the glint of the
steady eyes. He took a sndden resolu
tlon.
"1 believe you're really interested In
this matter." Dorr said briefly; "Sup
pone we talk this over before hunting
the taxi chauffeur."
"I wns' merely ' curious,, that's all,"
wns the noncommittal murmur.
"That girl Is not her daughter," John
coutlnued "I have reason-to believe
that it is Mlxs Huth Gallon, the heir
ess to the 'Mnster Kev" mine, whom she
Is abducting." His pitfudon biased
forth In spite of his self restraint. "1
must find her nnd save her."
"Might I ask what relation you are
X tbe young lady?" asked tbe detec
tive mildly.
John stared at hi in and then realized
the .oddity of his actions and words,
lie briefly explained his position ut tbv
initio and bis wardship of the liefrcss
He also went into detail as to what be
suspected, Wltkernii of. describing him
carefully. .....
"Ho Wits one or tliein, sure enough."
agreed the detective. "But young heir
esses ain't being kidnaped days like
these out of hotels like this. '
"I may bo mistaken," John assented
wearily. "All 1 know of MPs. Darnell
Is from occasional words dropped by
Wllkersou. But 1 suppose we might
get a clew as to where they went any
way."
After some search of the long line of
taxis tbey came to one which the de
tective Identified as the one Mrs. Dar
nell had takon the night before.
"Driver, take us wbere you did those
fares who were in sucb a hurry last
night," the detective ordered.
The chauffeur shook his head. "You
can search me for tho address," he re
turned. "There wasn'f any."
The driver loaned out from bis seat
nnd went on earnestly: "You know
how they Jumped In and we rolled off.
Well, it seemed it was a case of life
and death, according to the woman,
and I stepped on the machine and
hastened some toward the North Pa
cific hospital, lint when wo got Into
Chinatown one of the men hailed mo
and told mo to drive Just ns ho said.
Ho got out here In frout with me. nnd
when wo rencbed a certain spot they
all bent It"
"Can you take us to that spot?"
"I wns Just wondering to myself
whether I could And It," was the re
spouse, "But I'll try."
He threw In his clutch nud tbe car
left the lino nnd atnrted tip the hill
toward California street John' Dorr
leaned back against the Cushions with'
s strauite sense of nt Inst being on bis
way toward his goal. Ho barely beard
his companion's murmur, "Evidently
they took ber into the lower inrt of
Chinatown."
We usually credit tbe oriental with
little or uo Imagination, pointing to
his art. his clothes nud his lnngungo as
evidences. As tho fact runs, even the
Chinese coolie uses the faculty of
Imagination more frequently than his
white brother on an equul social plane.
Slug Wnh, or Wnb Slug, as be was
Indifferently cnltpd, was outwardly n

stolid, dull eyed Chinese of uncertain
middle age. Ills picture It was In tbe
gallery of every secret service office
from Slugapore .to Philadelphia was
not less changeless of expression, nor
more tecltnru than lie. Yet in spite of
bis somber clothes and general air of
blank stupidity, Sing Wnh was a man
of mark, a man with n history replete
with adventure and. not too seldom
with crime. . m ,. ,
If the ordinary criminal could have
an olBee or a store be would quadruple
bis profits. ; But tho common ran of
rascals must steal and fly. Their post
oHIce address is a figment. Tbey are
not at borne when opportunity knocks.
Sing Wub knew this, and it was bis
boast that for thirty years any one
who wanted him, either day or nlgbt,
could find blm.
So he sat at the back of his little
store uigbt after night, , blinking
through the wooden screen at the va
rious customers who came in to trade
or barter. And year after year tbey
came to Ids door, the plrute and the
tblef, tho smuggler and tbe robber, and
he took bis toll of them nnd passed
them on. . Whither? Slug Wah never
told. Ami because be did not tell they
came back wltb greater loot nud rich
er booty, and he again passed them
through his store to vitnlsb utterly
from the haunts of men and the pur
view of tbe police.
Among the many hundreds who bad
availed themselves of Sing Wall's aid
was 'Wllkersou, who. during dark pe
riods of his career, had several times
run athwart the barriers of the law
and been compelled to seek refugo
where he could.
Harry Wllkersou was not n fool. In
some ways be was brilliantly endowed.
He recognized Sing Wall's superiority
to nil others In tho great game of out;
witting tho law. He perceived beneath
the stolid mask the alert active, stu
dious mind which was ever vigilant,
never forgetful, always intelligently
wat;hing (he world that passed before .
Ills filmed eyes. The Chinese had, aS '
well, acknowledged Wllkerson's adept
ness aud persistency. In several deals
they bad been partners to tbclr mutual
profit
"You ar a very good fellow, Har
ry," Slug Wall had told him once as
they drank ten in a little room in the
rear. "You nro a smart man almost
as smart as I am. But you are too
hungry. You cannot resist your appe
tites. Now, I" he made a slight ges
ture of distaste wltb his lean brown
hand "I have no nppetlles."
Wllkorson nodded.' "I guess you're
right, Sing Wah. You even haven't
any pride. You talk pidgin English to
the tourists and the rest, instead of
speaking the perfect English you
know." .
Tbe dull eyes lit for a moment hu
morously. "I have always felt that I
owed It to Oxford not to flnuut my ed
ucation in a small tradesman's shop,
don't you know?"
The Imitation of tho Oxonian drawl
had been so natural that Wilkerson
hod slapped bis thighs In dfllght
Thereafter be took a peculiar pleasure
In watching Sing Wnh's assumed silent
stupidity nnd comparing it with what
ho knew to be the real person behind
tho dull features.
It was to Wilkerson that the Chi
nese had explained his reason for nev
er chnnglng his address, no matter
how brisk the police might be. "And
I have thought out a scheme which
you will like," he went on, "Come
with me."
It wns then thnt h showed Wllker
sou tho cylindrical room which b:d a
single door and revolved at a touch on
t lever.
"Dangerous stuff !A com men ted Wil
kerson. "If the police tlnd that they 11
suro laud you."
Sing Wah's pallid lips opened In faint
smile. "I built It for them. And the
Cltiuiitown guides know about It and
will charge $10 extm for a trip through
the horrors of the underground, ns they
call It" The Chinese sneered. "Let
them play with such things while I use
the brains heaven gave mc. And yet.
sometime Hint trick room may serve
.a purjose."
Thus it came about tbst Harry Wl
kersoo. driven to bis wits' end to ac
compllsb bis designs, bethought Iiim of
Sing Wah and fairly drove Jean ltar-;
ncll and Drake before him. ?-''
To Mrs. Darnell's credit ll must be
said tbat she rebelled strongly. Rut
f "in'1 V f
"You've got to de the triok."
tbe stake was too great to risk, and she
bitterly consented to Wllkerson's has
tily outlined plan of hiding Huth away
somewhere in Sing Wab's precincts on
til they could once more get their plans
into working order. ; - .y,; );
Before she would leave the place
she must Indeed see Sing Wah himself.
"Will the girl be safe borer' she de
manded. . The Cbluese looked at her flushed
und passionate beauty In silence until
sbe repeated her question. Then be
said quietly nud in his owu exquisite
ly modulated English; "m need have
little fear. The servants are honest
and discreet. And" lie let bis eyes
meet hers fully-"! think it ta possible
tbat she Is safer now than she bat
been for some time. Good night, mad
am!" "
While Wllkersou und Mrs. Darnell
had been hurriedly arranging matters
with Sing Wub. Drake bad gone In
search of lodguigs nearby. Ho found,
them In what had once been a noted
hotel, which had fallen Into sad decay.
It was. in the faded rooms he engaged
here that the three met to consult on
the future. - ; v
"The first thing to do Is to get bold
of those deeds and papers sbe has in
her grip." said Wilkerson. "'I wonder
you didn t think to get them before,
Jean." . ... :'-:
The "woman's eyes lit wltb dull
hatred, but' she made no answer. She'
watcbed him. fuss wltb the locks of the
hand satchel which sbe had indicated
as the one in which Kuth carried bor
valuables. When It opened and Wil
kerson thrust his clutching fingers
downward Into It Mrs. Darnell leaned
forward as if in protest He paid no
attention to her, but continued bis
search with ever Increasing haste. At
last be straightened up with an oath
so venomous and deadly that even
Drake shrank back. i f
"The deeds aren't here," Wilkerson
said thickly. "She's hidden them!",'
"But wbere?" i "
Tbls question seemed to break Wll
kerson's almost steely iutensity of pur
pose. The question put his whole prob
lem before him In two words but
where? ' He shifted his eyes from the.
emptied satchel to the curtained win
dow. . Instantly there; leaped . before
him the picture of the truck turning
slowly over In tbe gulch, of tbe huge
billow of smoke, of tho little lances of
Arc that charged through the dry. un
dergrowth as if to preserve to the
flames their prey. Wns it for this that
he was a murderer? Tbe curtain blow
Inward before some vagrant wind from
tbe bay, and Wilkerson drew back in
terror.
"What is it. Hurry r demanded Mrs
Darnell, instantly taklug alarm.
"Nothing," be said sullenly. "I wns
Just thinking of something." He turn
ed on Drake. "You've got to do the
trick," he went ou. ' v
How's that?" demanded the young
cr id An. - ',.
Wilkerson eagerly formulated his
bis plan, ticking off the points on the
tips of bis quivering fingers.
First you re Everett, turned up at
last. You find her"- , :
"In Chinatown!'' sneered Drake.
"You can easily gain her confidence
and get hold of tbe. papers, and may-
bo"- .
Drake laughed uglily. VI look like
the kind of Joker who would dress up
as a banker aud tben proceed to renew
my cllcnt'B acquaintance In a Chinese
joint How am I supposed to know
she's there? I tell you, Wilkerson, that
you can't travel straight, even when It
flays you. - Why in uous name you
ever took that girl to thnt place ot
81ug Wab's is beyond my comprdhen
slon. Any place would have been bet
tor. Now you have put tbe heads ol
all of us In a noose. You know whuf
people will say when"
"They 11 say nothing, said Wllkei
son furiously, nnd he proceeded once
more to argue that Drake could easily
continue to Impersonate Everett anil
