I am sure that the hearts of all
people are touched with a keen feel
luff of sympathy as the continuous
reports come to us from time to time
: of the suffering in our own city -on
account of s ' lack of sufficient food
or clothing. Immediately' upon Ihear
ing.of.any worthy case most people
say "well let us take up a subscrip
tkn for them," and immediately hie
themselves of f to the business see,
: tion of the city to obtain money from
the wealthy business man,
This is done until the poor ubsiness
- man ' knows not where . to took
what to do. It isn't every business
man that is in a position to yield gon
erously to every call for ; charity,
, Where there is a general need , only
a co-operative effort of ail the peo
ple can absolute justice be done. Es
pecially is there a need for co-op sr-
atlve effort on the part of afl Christ
iana of our city. Any church that
does not feel keenly the burden of
the work "which Christ set for His
church, to do, misses a large oppor
tunity lor real Christian service.

. Something of the things that ail
the , Sunday Schools and the young
men who aught to be in Sunday school
were, tersey told in a brief speech .at
tfcc M. E. Church, last evening by
Mr. Newjrtyer, a traveling man who
"makes" territory .tributary to , La
Grande. , The speaker pointed out that
there is a gab between ithe ages of
13 and 20 in all Sunday schools, and
the composit reason is headed by the
i act that the Sunday schools often
have nothing to offer to that age:
they don't get anywhere in the words
of the average high school boy him-,
self.: The speaker pointed out some
pf .the reasons for it; if "Dad" would
go, to Sunday school : the ; "Fellers"
would be more anxious to o. and if
the Sunday schools wouldn't sing "I
want to be an angel" it would help
some more." ; I he average American
boy isn't ready to be angel not by
any means", said the speaker. "Give
the boy a modern and practical an
plication of the lessons laid down by
tne grand old men of ancient biblical
times and he wiJl listen eagerly. ' If

I
can vouch for it that the Christi
church which the Lord has seen fit
to call me to serve in this city de
sires to do its part in the work which
is plainly before us. Our church board
of officers have talked this over and
have prayed over the matter until
they finally have hit upon the follow-
ing plan, somewhat unique but never-
thelees one which iwe trust will prove
effective in doing this much needed
work effectively.
The Christian church has rented the
old Geddes store building which they
will make a center from which will
be -distributed .that which the Spirit
prompts the, Children of Mercy to
send to the poor. Any one reading
inese imes wno happen to have any
articles of clothing to spare will
. wiM please phone to Rev. L. L. Mysrs
who will see to it that these articles
are collected and brought to this cen
tor of distribution and from there
distributed to those who may be in
need and worthy to receive. Also
those who may bo so fortunate as to
have edibiles that they can snare will
' ; be welcome and that which they have
vo onus amriDute will be received as
irom the Lord,
The church will bIbo strive to look
after the spiritual needs of people
who may not as yet have received
r the great blessing of salvation from
the Lord. And from night to night

many .thousands rejoice in salvation
of God. Comfortable scats will be
provided for all who come. The
building will be well heated and well
lighted. The ipreachintfj will begin
Monday night this week and continue
evtry night. The subjects will be for
this week as follows:
Monday night: "The Wonderful
Savior." '.
Tuesday night: "The Wonderful
Bible." ' . - ' .
Wednesday night: "The Wonderful
World Wo Live In."
Thursday night: "What Is Man."
Friday night: "The Wonderful

Saturday night: "A Wonderful His-
...tory.".,-- ..
- Remember the place of meeting will
be the old Geddes building now known
as the "Anthony Building" on the
corner of Fir and Monroe streets,
Thus the Christian church is making
an attempt to carry out the will of
tne Master who came to save the
soul and to feed the hungry. All are
welcome to come. ; : ,
Minister Myers promises a series
of sermons that will at once reach
the people and at the same time be
food for thought end the church de
sires that all who road these lines
respond in whatever way they can
either by some material gift to tho
Lord or by attending these nightly
meetings to hear' what the Lord may
desire of you. Tou are welcome. 1
