La (Inimlt'
Portland, June 25. (Special) Sev
eral Inquiries have come from the in
terior recently regarding the prob
able effect of the Panama canal upon
this year's wheat prices and freight
charges to Europe. . ' '
The fact that it will be practically
impossible for sailing vessels to use
the canal to advantage and that only
9 very small amount of steamer space
has as yet been chartered, local grain
exporters were today of the opinion
that no benefits whatever would be
derived by the producer.
Most of the ships that will be used
this season in transporting the Pa
cific Northwest grain orep to Europo
have already been chartered and there,
hts been hO provision whatever made
regarding any lowering of rates pro
dding the canal is in operation.
, Those that have chartered steam-era-
are making an attempt to secure :i
reduction providing the big ditch U
L'sed and are now negotiating with the
owners regarding this. The fact that
few steamers have 'been fixed there.
i ire eliminates any chance of the grain
securing any benefits, as sailing ves
sels always carry cargoes for less'
money than the steamers.
. There is practically nothing doing
in the spot wheat market at this time,
as there is really nothing being of
fered. A. small amount of contracting.
h reported in the interior for early
delivery new crop with reports as
high as 71c bushel at Pendleton. No
late business has been confirmed.
But for a few minor markings the
market prices remain about the same
today. Some of the fruits as cher
ries and peaches show a few cents
cheaper. . Cherries are beginning to
arrive in market in quantities and are
being sold by the pound rather than
by the box as the earlier varieties
were.

COWED THE CHINESE. "
rha "Foreign Devil" Used a College
Yall as a Battle Cry.
Ca board a launch on which I war
sailing up the Yangtze river were
ibout thirty Chinese soldiers of such a
raganiumn appearauce as to excite my
suspicions, but fortunately without
their rifles. As eveuiug of the first day
came on they crowded around the
small deck bouse and demanded of the
native agent to know what toe "for
elgn devil" was doing here. Now, 1
bad been cleaning aad oiling the vari
ous parts of my stimple machine gun
during the day.
Before nightfall I drew the blinds of
the deckhouse and, quickly assembling
the gun, slipped In a loaded be'.t, 1
uow told the agent, who was white
with four, to tell these fellows that this
"foreign devil" "belong crazy" and also
"hun lull!" (very Herce) nnd as a sort Of
warning to "keep off the grass" I open
ed the door and let off a strlne vS
about fifty shots into the air. at th
same time giving the Yolo college yell,
which was the handiest warcry I couid
think of nt the moment.
Whether it was the Information Im
parted by the ugent, Chen, the shots or
the Yale cheer 1 cannot say, but all
hands crowded to the other end of the
launch nnd remained at a respectful
distance until Nnnchnng was reached,
to the great amusement of the Chinese
captain and engineer, who. however,
hud (Wem ed It good policy to allow
the iiahsengers to settle their own
disputes without Interference. This
Incident Is pleasant to remember, but
at the time I was badly scared. From

Marrying the Whole Family.
"I am marrying Tom, but I am not
marrying his whole family," sold a
bride the other day. Yes, but you are.
When you get married you do coma
into relationship with bis whole fami
ly, and you can't help yourself. 1
have known a number of cases in
which some "sniffy" bride or bride
groom tried to ignore certain mem
bers of the "married into" family and
later bad to be closely connected with
them. There was civility on both
sides, but the early break could never
be quite covered up, though the one
who made it would have given any
thing to have it forgotten. When you
get married, unless there ore actual
criminals there whom duty would for
bid you to recognize, accept cordially
all of tho family into which you are
going. Don't be mean and ulry ubout

and propriety., there mnv lie oihi.r

When your kidneys hurt and your back
feels sore, don't get soared and proceed
to load your stomach with a lot of drugs
that excite the kldneya and irritate the
entire urinary tract. Keep your kldneya
clean like you keep your bowels clean,
by flushing them with a mild, harmless
salts which removes the body's urinous
waste and stimulates them to their nor
mal activity. The function of the kid
neys is to filter the blood. In 24 hours
they strain (rasa it 600 graina ol acid
and waste, to we can readily understand
the vita) Importance of keeping the kid
neys active.
Drink lots of water you can't drink
too much) also get from any pharmacist
about four ounces ol Jad Salts; take
a tables poonful in a glass of water
before breakfast each morning for a few
days and your kidneys will act fine.
This famous salts is made from the
acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined
with lithia, and has been used for genera
tions (a clean and stimulate clogged kid
neys; also to neutralize the soldi in
urine so it no longer i a touroe of Irri

Jad Salts is inexpensive; cannot in
jure; makes a delightful effervescent
lithia-water drink which everyone should
take now and then to keep their, kid
neys clean and active. Try this, also
keep up the water drinking, and no
doubt you will wonder what became of
