In order to successfully reduce the
number of wormy apples to the min
imum at harvest time, it is very es
sential to prevent as many of the
first brood of larvae or worms from
entering the fruit as is possible and.
thereby proportionately reduce the
number of thje second brood which is
the more serious in the most sections
of the Grande Ronde valley. Tho first
brood of moths in Union county prob
ably appear about June 15 to June 30,
depending upon the climatic condi
tions. This season a few of the moths
were noticed on June 15 and on June
20 quite a number were found.
The eggs, which are 'laid singly,
are minute, scale-like o'jcts, about
one-twentieth of an inch in diameter,
pearly white in color and somewhat
translucent. They require from seven
to ten days to hatch.
The fruit should be covered witr
spray at the time eggs are hatching,
but it is considered the best policy t.i
apply the spray at the time it will
be most effective in controlling the
maximum portion of the brood. If
spray is applied too early, the frna
will outgrow the covering before Lho
brood is past andl a second applica
tion will be necessary in order to pet
good results. Therefore, it will be
well to wait until a few eggs 'are
hatched before starting, the sprayer.
Judging from the number of moths
that have emerged so far this season
the proper time for applying the spray
will be about June 25 to July I.
Spray with arsenate of lead, two
(2) pounds to 50 gallons of water.
If lime sulphur is to be used for scab,
use two (2) pounds of lead to 50 gal
lons of diluted solution. TTse one gal
lon of lime sulphur to 35 gallons of
water. "Back Leaf 40" may be added
to the above combination for the con
tro of Aphis, (one part of Black Leaf
4U to 1000 parts of water). Use high
pressure and nozzle that will produce
fine mist. Spray thoroughly.
