The practical phase of the Oregon
Tom Williams, a former La Grande
citizen of late years connected with the
Busch bank at Salem, and his son,
Winston, are the guests of relatives
in La Grande. Today they went out
to Imbler to visit Mr. and Mrs. Sher
wood Williams.
Supreme Judge and Mrs. Eakin and
son arrived this morning from Salem
and are in attendance at the pio
neer reunion at Imbler this after-
W. T. Patten, a resident of La
Grande, leaves tonight for Logan.
Utah, where he will spend four
months as engineer for the Morrison
Knudson Co. He was employed in
that capacity for the company on the
Spring street job, and in order to
obtain his service, the company of
fered him a bonus in the way , of ex
tra salary dollars. -
JURY OUT FIVE MINUTES.
Mr. and Mrs. S. O. Swackerhammer,
Robert Withycombe, Miss Neva Gil-
fillan, all of Union, Homer Bidlwell
and wife of North Powder, were
among those who came over to La
Grande todajr to go on to Imbler for
the reunion.
George Scibird, secretary of the
UrJon Stock show was over today
f;om Union. He says the financial
end. of the show suffered a little on
account of the bad weather.
"Uncle Billy'! Bentley Dead. -
Baker, June 20. News of the
death of W. H. Bentley at the Odd
Fellows' home in Portland Thursday
was received in Baker yesterday and
met with many expressions of regret
on the part of old-time acquaintances
for he was one of Baker county's old
est and respected pioneers. He was
82 years of age at the time of his
death and had been in the home about
three years, oldl age ana Infirmities
making it necessary for him to be
come an inmate. "
"Uncle Billy", as he was familiar
ly known, came to Baker county 46
years ago and took up his residence
at Wingville and was one of the
prime movers in the institution of
Wingville Lodge, I. O. O. F in
which he retained his membership to
the time of his death. He was a
member of Eleazer Encampment ' of
Baker Lodge No. 7, and on the roll
of membership of the Robekah lodge
of this city. For several years r.e
vas police judge of Baker. His only
relative is a niece residing at Cen
tralia, Wash.
The funeral will be held tomorrow
(Sunday) afternoon at 2 o'clock at the
Odd Fellows' hall in this city. The
services will be conducted by Eleazer
Encampment and all members and
friends are asked to be present.
William Hess Acquitted on Charge of
Stealing Hides.
Less than five minutes were con
sumed in reaching a verdict in the
William Hess case. The evidence
was submitted to the jury without
argument yesterday afternoon and a
verdict of acquital was returned with
little delay. Mr. Hess who lives near
Elgin was accused of stealing some
i hides. Attorney R. J. Greene repre
sented! the defendant.
I The case of Elizabeth Ryder against
.the city of La Grande in a damagj
suit for $15,000, is set down for
Tuesday. ,
I No cases are in issue today but'
; next week will return , to a period' of
activity again.
GIRL THREE YEARS OLD SHOT.

Bullet from Adjoining Room Tears off
Portion of Her Head.
Beaverton, Ore., June 20. Odella
Simpson, aged three, was killed late
yesterday when a rifle bullet from art
adjoining room tore away the back
of her head while she was playing at
the home of her grandfather, Rob
ert Simpson. It is believed Simpson's
nine-year-old daug'hter had been play
ing with the rifle and that it acci
dentally discharged. The girl's father
lives at Hillsboro.
Huntington People Worried.
Baker, June 20. A Huntington re
port is current hat the O.-W. division
is to be moved. It is said this time
that Ontario is to be made the new
railroad division point. That there
may be some such intention in the
minds of railroad officials is support
ed by the fact that all improvements
which were under way by the railroad
company at Huntington have been
stopped. It is felt that no dtefinito
action may be expected until the re
sults of the meeting of the directors
of the U. P. company are announced.
In the meantime property owners at
Huntington are on the anxious seat. ,
