NO TIME TO

BLIGHT MUST BE CARRIED TO
FINISH.
Danger of Resting After First Vic
tory Is Pointed Out.
(BY CLAUDE C CATE.)
County Agriculturist.)
Judging from the reports received
from other sections of Oregon and
Washington, blight Is ravaging the
pear and apple orchards in a serious
form in many districts, and in some
cases many acres of trees have been
practically ruined already this 'sea
son. Growers of fruit trees of
Union county should lie encouraged
and thereby benefited, by the fact
that, in every case where the most
damage has been done, no concerted
action or community cooperation is
in evidence in these infested districts.
And this fact or condition is
in direct keeping witn tne Ms
tcry of this disease and its
effects. That is to say that very lit
tle attention is given to this disease
until it develops to such an extent,
that financial ruin faces a large
number of the fruit growers, and
the whole industry is threatened with
destruction. Then it is that mass
meetings of the tax payers are called,
speeches are made pro and con, bit
ter feelings among neighbors are ex-

OIL COOK STOVE
does all that any wood or coal stove will do. It bakes, broils,
roasts and toasts perfectly. The long chimneys concentrate
the heat just under the utensils. It is not wasted or thrown
out into the room. The New Perfection doesn t smoke or
smell; doesn't taint the food. It burns kerosene, the
clean, cheap fuel. Think of the comfort no coal or
wood to lug; no ashes to dirty the kitchen. Ask
your dealer for the JNew reflection.

I perienced, , scientists are called to
i lecture and advise methods of eradi
j cution, appropriations are made
: and in some places not far from here
j appropriations to exceed fifteen
thousand dollars have been made to
j carry on the war against this foe.
The lesson that we can learn from
other sections less fortunate than
' the Grande Ronde --valley ought to
'be instilled into the minus of every
'tree owner in the Union county, to
j teach us to take every advantage of
the experience of others, and above
' all things, take advantage of the
! local conditions as they present
themselves at this time.
I The condition of the Grande
j Ronde valley, taking every thing into
consideration, will never be better
for the complete control and nrohahln
eradication of pear and apple blight,
than it is at the present time. In
our spring campaign untold benefit
has been derived from the general
clean up of the holdover blight. The
favorable sentiment and attitude of
the people in taking hold of this
work, and the exceptionally favorable
weather conditions for the suppres
sion of a general spread of blight
that we have experienced so far this
season, are conditions and facto
that may never be correlated for
years to come. We have, spent
money and energy so far this spring
and apparently good results have re
warded our efforts, but all may be
lost in a fortnight, and a repetition
only of greater magnitude be at
tempted another season, ir tree
owners do not work hand in hand for
the next few weeks in cutting out
the new blight that we are bound to
have. New blight can be found in
most all the orchards, if careful ex
amination is made of your trees you
will find frut and twigs that are be
ginning to wilt, begin work as soon
as this condition is noticed. Cut out
and burn all wilted branches, disin
fect tools and wounds with corrorsive
sublimate. Be sure to cut far below
all evidences of the disease.
The blighted fruit spurs and twigs
ooze very copiously at this season
though not wilted to any noticeable
extent. The ooziner is more dantrer-
ous during rainy and moist weather
and the sooner it is taken and
burned 'the less blight we will have
in the future. The blieht eerm has
been working ever since the blossom
ing period and may not show very
serious effects for a few days unless
we have some very hot weather fol
lowing a rain. When the effects of
the blight germ do appear, don't say
or think that blight struck us over
night, or that it was caused by an
electric storm. It is neanng the
time when its effects are to be ex
pected and a rain followed by hot
days will cause a general wilting of
affected parts. Be ready to cut as
fast as it appears, cease cultivating
and irrigation and let blight receive
all the attention for a while. One
dny's work now means many later
on.
