LOCAL MAN RETURNS WITH
PUREBRED COWS.
Less Automobiles, Less Style . but
Bigger Bank Accounts.
J. W. Bush of this city and fr.' C.
Hamilton of Summervillo, who made
a trip back to Wisconsin for the pur
pose of purchasing pure bred Hol
stein cows, have returned with three
cars of choice stock. Mr. Bush
brought 22 head of cows, ranging in
ears from three to six, with which
he will stock his ranch a short dis
tance from Cove, v '
Mr. Hamilton brought 28 head of
cattle, including four registered
Holstein bulls. Some of these he has
already sold and others will be dis
posed of, and some will be taken to
his ranch near Summerville ' for
breeding purposes.
Aside of the information concern
ing these shipments of cattle, Mr.
Bush, this morning, in an interview,
had some things to say concerning
observations that will be interestmg
reading. Mr. Bush states that there
are no hard times in the middle west,
that in the states of Iowa, Illinois,
Nebraska , and Kansas money is
plentiful at four and a half per cent,
on real estate and plenty of money
at the banks at six.. Farmers culti
vating land that is not as fertile as t
any in the Grande Ronde valley,
are making fortunes out of cattle

and hogs and milk. 'This," says Mr.
Bush, "is largely due to the fact that
people in those states are not as ex
travagant as the people in the west
ern states. There is no lavish spend
ing of money for things that are not
'necessary, and people husband their
means. There are more automobiles
in the city of La Grande than there
are all along the route in the farming
communities. People do not dress
so stylishly as they do here, but have
more in their banks.
"Oregon is not getting the people
it ought to 'by reason r-t its freak
legislation. Single tax agitation is
keeping thousands of thrifty farmers
from coming outthis way, and all
of them are afraid of the constantly
climbing taxes."
On this trip Mr. Bush visited with
his daughter, Mrs. C. C. Baker, of
Tilden, Nebraska, with his sister, Mrs.
Keoberlin, of Madison, Nebraska and
with his mother-in-law, Mrs. E. Hob
son, of Winnebago, Illinois. On his
return trip he was ten days coming
out from Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin,
where the cattle were purchased.
